Subject: US&EU crying for more rare earth materials to make more weapons,
(CNN) -- The United States, the European Union and Japan filed a trade case Tuesday over China's export restrictions on minerals that are crucial for the production of many high-tech devices, according to EU and U.S. officials.

The case aims to pressure China to lift export limits on certain minerals known as rare earths, a senior Obama administration official said.

President Barack Obama will make a statement about the case later Tuesday from the White House Rose Garden.

China produces 97% of all rare earths, according to the EU. The materials are used in products such as flat-screen televisions, smart phones, hybrid car batteries, wind turbines, energy-efficient lighting, electronics, cars and petroleum.

Of particular concern was how vital the minerals are for top-of-the-line weapons, including missile guidance systems, drones and the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

We might actually have to open up some mining in California -- but wait -- they don't want mining and block every effort to do it there....

They are actually looking at exploring the seabed for easy to get to metals. People forget 3/4 of the planet is under water.

the stuff is very dirty, rare earths is not rare at all just hard to process. nobody wants to build processing plants to make it. the mine itself would be in Australia. but they wouldn't build it there LOL.

Some 3,000 Malaysians staged a protest Sunday against a rare earth refinery being built by Australian miner Lynas over fears of radioactive contamination.

It marked the largest rally against the $230 million plant in eastern Malaysia, and could pose a headache to the government ahead of national elections widely expected this year.

Authorities recently granted Lynas a license to operate the first rare earths plant outside China in years. The plant in Pahang state has been the subject of heated protests over health and environmental risks posed by potential leaks of radioactive waste.

They aren't used only in weapons. As far as I am concerned China can do what they want with materials produced in China? If it sucks for the rest of us, too bad.

The message is garbled, but F_D is correct. Rare earths aren't actually that rare, and if I remember correctly, we have some deposits here in the US. It's just a PITA to mine.
