Subject: What to watch while working?
So, I'm a lucky enough sod to have a job where I work at home, and can run a personal laptop in the background that plays netflix/hulu/dvds/whatever.

I'm out of stuff to let play whilst I work, and I'm looking for some "can't miss" suggestions, in either tv shows, or movies.

(@this board's mod: If this falls into the category of collections that we're not allowed to post, I apologize and no argument if you decide to delete, but I thought it would be safe to ask for suggestions.)

I know this might be a strange suggestion, but bear with me. You could try working during your working hours.

There are far too many people who want to work but can't find a job to be taking your job that lightly, in my opinion.

Sorry if this came off badly, but being someone who was laid off a few years ago and been unable to get another real job seeing someone make a topic like this disgusts me.

I like the new show called Revenge. It is very addictive and a great show!

I do the same thing sometimes. It all depends on what I am working on as to if having a show going will interfere. When I do though it is typically something I have seen before that I can use as background noise, much like a radio in a typical office. For that stuff like Futurama, SG1 and SGA, Doctor Who or the various Star Treks does the job. This is mostly via Netflix.

Also, Quazi how do you have any clue what his job entails or if having shows going would interfere with it? I am at my desk and work available about 18-20 hours a day (no exaggeration) and I do all kinds of things to keep me entertained while work is churning away in the background.

If you are finding time to not do work while you are at work then you are spending too much time at work as far as I'm concerned. It's a waste of the business' money, now if you are running your own business then by all means waste your own money.

So listening to the radio is wasting time? Having something running in a second monitor while you monitor scripts/maint on a server is wasting time? Watching something while you wait for the phone to ring in a support capacity is a waste of time? Those are some broad strokes you brush with.

I do work, and I work hard, and I do my work well.
And just so you don't assume I am doing something untoward, my own boss recommended we take 5 minutes out of every half an hour to look at something else, whether we do it at the end of the half hour, or interspersed throughout it. His words, not mine.

For me, I actually concentrate far better and am far more productive in my job, when I have some background noise going, IE allowing episodes of (insert show here) to run in the background on another monitor. Or blasting music, which I also on occasion do. Hence my request for shows or movies to allow to run whilst doing my job.

I know first hand how hard it is to find a job and believe you me, I am more than grateful for the one I have. Yes, your words did come off a bit badly to me, as you automatically seem to have assumed I was not working, or that I was mucking about instead of working. I'm sorry if it disgusts you that I do better when I have some kind of background noise whilst I am working, but that's just the way it is.

I've tried working in silence, with nothing but my computer monitor in front of me, and I am a: far less apt to stay concentrated on my work, b: get far less done when I work that way, and c: far more likely to become distracted by any random thing, if there is no background going on. It sucks that you've been unable to find a job, and I commiserate, but not every job requires intense, silence-enveloped concentration for every single second that you are working. If my job was that kind of job, I probably wouldn't last long at it, lol.

@ Stiger and Aroith, thanks I will put 'em on the list to check out. Also @Stiger, my tastes are wide and varied, but I don't need something that I will absolutely love. I just need something decent to run as background noise, that I can glance at every once in awhile to get away from the black text on a stark white screen that I stare at for 8+ hours a day. =D

And thanks Steelwind, I will add those to the list.

I just finished letting BSG run its course, so maybe I will go for one of those. I also queued up the first season of Primeval. I'd forgotten how much I loved to hate on that show. =)

Haha it certainly had its ups and downs. Check out Jekyll (BBC miniseries, Netflix has it on streaming) too though it is one you will want to dedicate time to and not just half watch.

If it's something I will find myself actually watching and paying attention to, then it'll have to wait, but I'll add that to the things I need to watch (or re-watch, as the case may occasionally be) on my days off, lol.

Gotta love BBC shows. >:]

Well see that isn't what I thought you were talking about. The thing I was talking about hating was when someone sits there for large periods of time when they could be working instead. You weren't really informative in your post so I had to draw my own conclusions. I do apologize for implying you don't work hard, but you have to admit there's enough lazy jerks in this world that it's the better bet to assume they want to just watch the videos instead of do their work.

As for the person who compared listening to a radio to watching a TV... HA! That is freaking hilarious.

If you read my posts you would know I was comparing having tv shows that I've already seen many times running in the background while I work not sitting and watching tv. tongue It is noise, much like Syrilian said I have to have something going to keep my mind from distracting at every little thing.

I just can't do that personally, if there is a TV going I inevitably find myself staring zombified at it. I find music to be great but once you introduce a picture my attention span is ruined. I probably have some minor form of ADD but I never did get a doctor to verify it since I can function perfectly well without all those drugs they fill you with.

I'm frankly jealous of people who can continue to focus on something else while a TV is going. plain

I'm like that Quazimortal, if something visual is going on that's what I focus on. I can work with music in the background. But not video's.

I know people that like to sleep with the TV on for background noise. I went on vacation once with a friend that always turned the TV on to sleep... which had the opposite effect one me. Made it much harder for me to sleep. I had to wait until he was well asleep then turn the TV off before I could sleep.

Just thinking about having to sleep with a TV on makes me feel tired. laugh

I do personally sleep with music though. The same CD every night in fact, Merlin's Magic: The Heart of Reiki.
