Just found an old wedding ring. Big ole hunking piece of Platinum...

What's the best way to turn this puppy into some vacation money? Take it to a jeweler, one of those we buy gold places, a metal recycling facility???

Who pays the best?

Probably. If you can sell it as a ring, you will get more than if you sell it for its gold content. Even with gold being sky high, unless it is a massive ring, you probably won't get more than $100 for it.

Weigh it, if you can, and figure out exactly how much gold is in it, then figure you'll get maybe 20% less than the actual gold value.

<edit> Whoops. Just insert "platinum" where I said gold.

Find an older, widowed rich woman.
Fck her brains out for a few weeks.
Give her the ring.
Profit.

Yeah I don't think I will get anything for it via craiglist as a ring.

It's hand crafted and all that, it's kinda cool (to me) but it's nothing 'special' - just carved up platinum.

Found a good high end precious metal refiner that is local. Gonna find somewhere to weigh it, and then take it in and see what they will give me for it.

I'd be willing to marry you but you will have to bring two sheep and a goat to the table.

The top of your head is kinda flat, I could but a beer or a slice of pizza on the top of your head while it's bobbing up and down...

Two sheep and a goat, hmmm...

i thought i did. didn't realize at the time that it only counted if they were lost related to something with the house (theft, fire, whatever). i needed a different type of insurance to cover plain old loss. expensive lesson.

I thought your wife was the one with the money.

My wife also lost the first ring I got her (not a wedding or engagement ring). Good thing it only cost $70. grin

I am kinda shocked you replaced it with another ring that expensive. Why not just get a cheapo $300 ring instead?

because she doesn't want to wear a $300 cheapo engagement ring for the rest of her life. she was very attached to her ring. sadly, not physically attached. i should have it grafted to her skin except she has to take it off to do surgeries.

Seething you and wifey are both smarter than this. Stop smoking shrooms with the other OP rejects.
You already lost one 9k ring that insurance won't cover.
Her situation hasn't changed as you said, she will still have to take any replacement ring off to do her job.
Plus, you both suck at keeping track of said ring at other times as well, unless she was doing surgery at the Mexican restaurant.

Have her find something she can get attached to that isn't as work impeding as a ring. Maybe a broach or a necklace.

There are some rings you don't have to take off to do surgery!

wink

Yup and generally unless you schedule an expensive piece of jewelry onto a homeowners policy then it wouldn't be covered even if your house burnt down or it was stolen.

The industry standard for homeowners policy jewelry coverage is only $1,500, so those of you that have something worth more then that make sure it's covered.

Anytime you buy something expensive like that (art, furs, wine collection) you should always buy a valuable articles floater. Rather inexpensive and will cover it for pretty much everything except intentional losses.
