So the cloth of the interior ceiling is detatched on where it meets up at the back window. Any thoughts on how to fix that.?

Get some spray adhesive like for shipping labels. I bet that would do it. Just don't put it on too thick and watch the over spray or you might make a mess of it.

Do not try to spray glue it in the car.

It's probably held on with a couple screws under the dome light and some tree clips. Carefully pry the whole ceiling down (backing and all) and get it out of the vehicle before you start spraying any kind of glue. It also helps to orient the thing in a way that gravity helps hold it on while the glue sets wink

I would try this idea but not with super glue, that stuff doesn't fill/bridge gaps anyway.

I am under the impression he is trying to tack up the head liner?

which is light thin material.

It is light and thin, its also already pretty tight even when its disconnected. I have used a slightly curved spatula to push it back into place and fold it back over but even then its barely holding on.

maybe if I do it in stages?

Super glue, as in a Krazy Glue type of product, right? If so read the labels, they don't work on items where you have gaps to fill. They are best on items that have hairline cracks and fit back together tightly.

listen I'm totally for trying things but how the hell is hairspray going to hold the cloth longer than momentarily?

These are all ghetto fixes. Pull the damn thing out, put it on a bench and properly glue the liner back down. Or, if the liner is old and falling apart, go get some new fabric and reapply it.

the material is thin/sheer correct? no longer holding to the adhesive beneath?

the hair spray will adhere to the threads in the cloth and make the former adhesive a bit solvent shortly until it dries

hopefully you have a removable headliner, lots of newer models are snap into place one time use parts and are made out of cardboard/pressboard type stuff.

so basically if you want to take one out, you have to replace it.

by new I mean 90's or later.

You may want to talk to a local auto upholstery shop. A 1998 car is getting old, the foam material that is between the liner and backing board could be disintegrating which means that any solution other than replacement won't work or if the disintegration is not too advanced then Aons type of solution may work but will likely be a messy PITA.

There are shops that specialize in this and could make a much less painful affair that doesn't really cost that much.
