Subject: Anyone sold much on Craigslist? Question for ya
I'm selling some appliances and have been communicated with someone.

He tells me he wants the item and has agreed to my price.

He asked for some information, name, address n such and said he will send me a certified check in the mail and once I receive payment I should email him and he will arrange pickup.

Am I about to get scammed? That seems pretty trusting of him. Who's to say I don't cash the check and run?

Is there any way I get screwed with a certified check? I deposit it to my bank account and then it doesn't clear or something?

Or is this pretty standard operating procedure for Craigslist?

Google found this...

A certified check or certified cheque is a form of check for which the bank verifies that sufficient funds exist in the account to cover the check, and so certifies, at the time the check is written. Those funds are then set aside in the bank's internal account until the check is cashed or returned by the payee. Thus, a certified check cannot "bounce", and, in this manner, its liquidity is similar to cash, absent failure of the bank.

Most likely a fake check. Looks legit and even the bank will take it and credit it to your account... few days later they will find out your check is no good and you will have no appliances either.

Yeah I had seen that as well but still wasn't sure.

How do I know it's a real check to begin with.

After I deposit it, I assume it will take a couple days to "clear" at which point it comes back bogus and I'm out a washer/dryer and have no money to show for it.

Tyically, in this scam, the person sending it to you will tell you that it is for some huge amount, thousands of dollars. This is usually more than what they are paying you for whatever you're selling. They then ask you to give them their "change". This way you end up with a bad check AND out some money.

Rho is 100% right here.

This is a very common scam, they ship you a check for more than the amount, then ask you to send them back the extra.

In other words, run away from this very fast.

I really do not think banks even know... I once brought in a check and they were telling me it looked "suspicious" and wanted to know if I knew the person who gave it to me. The check was from the government... they just printed it funny apparently... used different fonts or something... they were telling me it would be a few days before they could verify it...

Tell the dude to send the check to his friend and have him cash it... really makes no sense to jump through these hoops unless you are getting scammed.

banks will accept those checks btw its very common and they'll bounce also very common. look it up on the net. very old scam even if its "certified" hell the bank will give you the money till their systems bounce it back to you and you'll be left holding a bounce check fee and lost item itself.

This of it this way:

You're selling something. You meet up somewhere and exchange the something for cash. It's that simple.

If somebody tries to complicate it more than that, it's a scam.

So long as you take a full week to clear it and then check with your bank to make sure it went through, it is pretty safe. It isnt like a regular check where there are several ways to pull the money back.

What raises a question is why send a certified check when the situation as described a normal check would work just fine.

CL is cash only for me. If a check was the only way to get paid i would insist they meet me at my bank where the check would be verified before the sale went through. I always insist on cash though. I have sold a couple rvs on CL and insisted on cash. One gal i made give me 10k in cash. She was a bit put out that i wouldnt trust her check. lol.

I've taken and given a check for stuff on craigslist, but I deposit it immediately (and told them to do the same), and made a copy of their driver's license.

and the guy I bought something from that was paid with check got my phone number and called me on the spot so he could be sure he had MY number as well.
