I didn't use a lawnmower, I walked around collecting cans and got a paper route.
My mom didn't buy red meat, nor canned salmon, although I ate lots of rice/lentils and other really cheap food.

My dad left my mom with 5 kids and no income. If not for her owning our house through her first divorce, we would have been homeless. Mom had a back injury, but started cleaning houses anyway to make sure we could eat and have electricity.
I often ate at the neighbor's house.
I don't think your questions really have anything to do with being poor or not, everyone's situation is different.

Mom was divorced when I was three but my father was a big part of my life too. He had to work two jobs so I had more toys at his house on the weekends.
I can remember a one bedroom apartment and my bed was in the den that was off the kitchen.
Lots of mac and cheese and pan fried hamburger meat with ketchup mixed in. I think that was the alternating dinner menu for a while.
My mom gave up a lot so I could have some things.
Making me think about this is making me get a lot of flashbacks all of a sudden. Stuff I have not thought about for twenty + years...Freaky.

Yes, until I was 9 years old, my two older brothers and two older sisters and my parents lived in a tar paper shack that had newspaper for insulation and a leaky roof. We didn't have hot water and the cold water was a pump in the sink or a pump out front of the house. We had to heat water on the stove for baths. I slept with my two older sisters in the same bed. We also had an outhouse.
My father went out to construction sites on his lunch hour to learn how to build stuff and then the whole family got together and built a small brick home in front of the shack on the same property. It had 4 bedrooms so I still did share a bedroom with one of my older sisters until she moved out but it had two bathrooms with flush toilets and we finally got hot and cold running water. My mom never got a dishwasher or microwave until I left home. I was the youngest of 5 children.
