The movie is a bit different from the book, but still good. Just watched it again today. Hope I don't have to add the label "Spoilers" to this!

Yep.

Sunday afternoon, nothing else to do. Overall it's an interesting cultural commentary, but otherwise it's a damn boring movie.

My mom was born in eastern Oklahoma not too far from Sallisaw. Her family lived thru this. They moved back and forth from California several times until her father died. They would move to California and build up a nest egg then go back to Oklahoma until it ran out again. I guess for me the story is not so boring.

Whoa. You managed to cite one that would give GoW a run for its money in the overrated dept.

Faulkener's "As I Lay Dying" would be the absolute worst. for me, but it isn't really rated as highly as the other two.

I was forced to read the book in and watch the movie in AP Lit. Almost ruined me on Steinbeck. I can't believe we cram this one down kid's throats when his other novels, Of Mice and Men and East of Eden (not to mention short stories like The Chrhsanthemums) are a bit less dry and a lot more significant. The Great Depression was depressing? Communism is an alternate form of government to capitalism? YOU'RE BLOWING MY MIND HERE, STEINBECK! Not.

I don't know how I managed to miss these books in school, but I was never required to read any of them. I always thought that weird. But we did move occasionally. Maybe it was early years in one school and later years in another. Whatever. I still missed them as requirements. No matter, I still read them anyway.

Steinbeck was never required at our school. Of course, I think we mainly did accelerated reader where you could pick what you wanted to read up until the 11th and 12th grades.

I started reading Steinbeck on my own after reading The Pearl for and AR test and enjoying it. I also liked Hemingway and Faulkner. *shrug*

Just don't make me read any Fitzgerald, Waldon, or Conrad. sick

While Grapes of Wrath did have a small bit of muckraking in it that was not the reason for writing it.

No, Sinclair's motivation was a particular political/economic stance he wished to advance THROUGH muckraking.

I sincerely believe Steinbeck sought out to create a good narrative depicting the life and times of people during the Dust Bowl...

Yes, he was a migrant fruit picker himself and did delve pretty deeply in to the mistreatment of migrant field hands of the time, but I don't think he had an agenda beyond making a story.

Sinclair's main objective was to expose the brutality towards and horrible living conditions of American meat packers during the early 1900s. Yes, it can be viewed as pro union, but I honestly believe that was a time when unionization was needed and justified...

Actually he did have an agenda. He set out to write the book in a fashion that showed business in a poor light.

While Grapes of Wrath did have a small bit of muckraking in it that was not the reason for writing it.

Banks, mainly. But, I think he was just being accurate.

When preparing to write the novel, Steinbeck wrote: "I want to put a tag of shame on the greedy bastards who are responsible for this [the Great Depression and its effects]." He famously said, "I've done my damndest to rip a reader's nerves to rags," and this work won a large following among the working class due to Steinbeck's sympathy to the workers' movement and his accessible prose style.

Everyone has their own agenda, some are motivated by politics, some are motivated by money... the reasons people write are endless.

My point was that Steinbeck's and Sinclair's motivations for these works were very similar.

Surly you mean the book, not the movie?

How are you supposed to properly answers questions in class unless you watch the movie? Its not like anyone actually read the book.

I didn't read it until I was 30.
