We were like 20 minutes from here and didn't see it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stanley_Hotel
We do road trips with no real plan..it's fun to just drive and see what you see.
Like on this trip I had a couple main things I knew we would see..everything else is an adventure.
I would have loved to spend the night there. I messed up ;p

Always, I go out of my way to miss shitty tourist traps and crap I "should" see.. Admittedly the Pyramids were cool and the Acropolis temple lets not forget the Colosseum, St Peters, and the sixtinth chapel.. If it does not have "wonder of the world" status it's usually not worth it, and the wonder of the world status is often just ruined by the myriad of humans crowding around it.. Nope, I usually just grab my Michelin guide a map and some local intel on where to hang. edit: Or my brother's creed obscurity is where little children run up and poke you to check if you're real since you're the first white person they have ever encountered. Him being around 6,3 blond with glacial blue eyes also helps..

We took a vacation to do the colonial New England thing and we were in D.C., I have always wanted to see the formal retreat at the Marine Barracks. We had been away from home for over three weeks and the kids were just done vacationing so we just went home.

I hate waiting in line so often I decide to skip places if it's too busy. Other times it's good to do the cliche tourist stuff.

I visited Washington DC back in 1998 during a trip with a pre-college program I was with (Upward Bound). Was pretty cool looking at the various sites such as the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Holocaust Museum, but we never got to go to the Smithsonian Museum. Which totally sucked, because they had a Star Wars exhibit there at the time, and I really wanted to go there, but again, other places ended up taking more time than originally thought and they had to cut the museum out.
