CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP)—Illinois fired Bruce Weber on Friday, letting go of a fiery coach whose first three years with the Illini included a run to the national championship game before a long, lackluster slide the past six years that culminated with a 17-15 mark this season.

About time for that, he lost control of his teams last year. Lots of wasted talent in dire need of strong leadership the past few years. I wonder if many people are disappointed by this (outside of Bruce and family of course).

as an alum, i applaud the change

he peaked in his first season, making it to the title game of the NCAA tournament. of course, that was with Selfs guys (Deron Williams et all)

he is not an awful coach, but he cant recruit for shit. im tired of seeing IL boys on other big 10 teams. and we need someone that can penetrate the Chicago HS scene

The tourney was definitely reached by Self's recruits getting experienced along with decent coaching by Weber, but something about his coaching hasn't instilled discipline, teamwork or leadership in the kids he recruited thereafter. The Chicago market is brutal, I'm not sure you can find a (hireable) head coach who can both coach effectively in game and also recruit the big markets.

As a (once again heartbroken) Northwestern fan, I've noticed that most of our recent success started once Coach Carmody picked up Tavaras Hardy as an asst. coach and Tavaras got his local connection mojo going. I don't know who Illinois has in those regards, but they haven't closed the deal on a lot of excellent talent.
