Like SoO said... there is some concern depending on the role.

Will they try to trash you in the industry if you leave without what they consider "sufficient notice"?

Will they crawl up your ass looking for imagined files/code you walked out with?

Will they try hard to convince you to say, throw offers at you that make you wonder if you're doing the right thing? Are those offers REAL or just a cover to keep you on a few extra weeks and then can you because your bosses are pricks?

There are a few reasons to get a bit nervous about it.

I guess that would depend on your job, as IT I can work in any industry, and I know I don't want my next job to be in the legal field (the one I am currently working in)

Will they crawl up your ass looking for imagined files/code you walked out with?
This will probably effect me more, since I have access to a lot of stuff in this office... but oh well. Lawyers will just make you sign a non-disclosure agreement and move on I think.

Will they try hard to convince you to say, throw offers at you that make you wonder if you're doing the right thing? Are those offers REAL or just a cover to keep you on a few extra weeks and then can you because your bosses are pricks?
I've had jobs offer me more, when I quit. In a polite way, I told them it was kinda insulting that you didn't offer it to me before, since you knew I deserved more. This I think will get me annoyed the most during transition time.

There are a few reasons to get a bit nervous about it.

You are about to experience an existential moment-savor it. By this I mean, a Sysyphus moment. We are condemned to roll a rock up a hill for eternity. At the moment, the rock is rolling down the hill and we are walking to it to resume our perennial task, we are free! This is our existential moment. Notice it , live in it, realize it. I celebrate for you. YOu can cultivate this mindset while rolling the rock up the hill , if you get where I am going.

The dynamic is simple and complex, Kamdar. I used a standard example . It is about "effortless effort." Im sorry you dont get it. I wouldnt have shared the concept if I did not think it would benefit whoever tried to understand it. Open your thinking. This is the first step towards understanding. How do you feel when your days work is done?

I had this happen to me recently. "You're doing great work and we'd like to give you a raise, but things are too tight right now, sorry." After several reviews of hearing that, this last time I told them that I was quitting. He immediately started talking about how "Don't do that, we can work something out, let me talk to my boss." I told him not to bother because I didn't want to work for someone who only gave raises to employees that threatened to quit. I even got a call from his boss the following day offering me a raise, but I refused and told him that he needed to learn to treat his employees better.

A lot of managers have taken advantage of the economic situation to really put the screws to their employees. As we (slowly) dig our way out, all that pent up frustration from employees is going to bite them in the ass. As more and more opportunities open up, employees are going to bolt for greener pastures.

Good luck. Sometimes they only way to advance is to change jobs. It takes a lot of guts to do this. I admire you for it. Me, I was always "settled" and not ready to take the risks I need to take. Looking back it was my biggest mistake. Again, good luck.

So how am I supposed to do that Bonk?

Call out sick the day I start my new job? Then quit via email?

They aren't going to yank it away. My best friend works where I'm going. They've been setting up my desk and chatting her up about me all week. I've also gotten a ton of unsolicited recommendations from other peers who know people at the place I'm going to.

The new job is secure.

Life is good because my wife makes a nice bit of money. Did not start out that way but it was how it turned out. I'm greatful as heck that it did. I love my life. Nevertheless I have this darn memory that will not let me fool myself. I can see all of my mistakes as if they were yesterday. Wrong thing said, stupid things done. Nothing I can do about them but I'm human, I have regrets.

Of those three words, grown is the only one that accurately describes them.

But tbh, I didn't know what to expect. I'm a lifelong tech worker and have never had to quit a job. Every single job (until this one) I've had as an adult I've gotten laid off from.

So many people quit the wrong way. If you are going to be working in the same industry your best bet is to tell your boss you are leaving before your fellow employees, finish any projects you are working on and even offer to train your replacement. You might have to grit your teeth through some of it but it will probably pay off in the long run.

I could argue this with you Bonzo, but it would require bringing you up to speed on SCRUM and agile development in general.

I didn't leave anyone in the lurch. And in SCRUM in particular, your team has to be the first to know.

I wasn't talking to you I was just making a general observation. So many people want to tell their boss what an idiot they are and it usually works against you in the long run. You seem to have taken a pretty level headed approach in protecting yourself and still handling thing so if even if you aren't leaving on a good note at least it is neutral.

Mea culpa. It is the outpost, easy to assume you are looking for an argument.

I kept it professional. Have gotten multiple emails from executive management expressing their regret for how my situation has been handled and wishing me well in my future endeavors.

I was always taught you finish how you start - with a firm handshake and a smile.

This is happening in my company right now. Several people have left for other jobs, simply quit or outright retired in the past several months. In one area of my shop, 4 people are actively looking for other jobs or are preparing to retire within a years time. That would be 4 of 6 in one of the most critical departments in the building.

I've always found it odd when people go out of their way to leave a job on as good a terms as possible.

You are quitting, for a reason. Chances are pretty damn good you are never going to return.

It's a small world. And an even smaller city with a very select group of people in my industry.

Chances are better then good that I will run into these people again. Or need their help in the future.

That you are remembered well and respected will matter then.
