Or is the connection basically as good as a physical wire? I'm guessing it is the former...

I don't think it totally ruins it, but it definitely diminishes it. Sometimes though it is your best choice if you can't run wires.

You mean in stereo playing music? In my experience it's like listening to a radio station with a weak signal.

Thanks. Figured it would drop the quality but wasn't 100% sure it would drop a perceptible amount...

I think the higher quality a system you have the more you would notice it. In car stereo the higher quality system you have the more you notice errors in music on discs or in the mixing/recording of that music.

since people have been listening to mp3s for years now i don't think sound quality is so much of an issue any more

They did a study and younger folk actually perferred the MPS with the extra noise and artefacts over a higher quality recording of the original music.
