So before the board expires I would like to address the Aids Sandwich.

I think this thread had gotten well underway before I ever saw it, and it was pretty funny. And most of us have even referred to it. Why? Because we knew people here would find it funny. But honestly, how many of us would voluntarily eat a partially eaten sandwich from someone we thought had AIDS? I know the chances of catching AIDS like this are pretty slim, but I myself would not do it. And I doubt any of you would either. You might say you would, but I don't believe you.

I agree with this. And it's funny, I went thru an AIDS awareness class long ago. One of the things they told us was that care givers have lower immunities.....and in the same lecture told us how hard it is to catch the AIDS.

I wouldn't, but I don't eat other people's partially eaten food regardless, so it's not because of that. Frankly it's not a fear of AIDS but just kind of an "ewwwww" factor in general- I mean, who knows where that other mouth has been?? I will only rarely take a bite or a drink from something of my husband's, and we swap spit all the time.

I thought it was pretty much impossible to get aids from simple contact. The last I heard not a single case had been reported from casual contact with people living with HIV/AIDS. I probably would but it would depend on the person. If they are keeping themselves relatively healthy/taking meds and such I think I would. If they have like open mouth sores all over and didnt care who they gave AIDS to then I probably wouldnt.

to be fair, even if you caught aids today you would be more likely to die of natural causes or another heart attack than to die of an aids related illness :P I wouldnt worry too much if I were you.

and even if you did catch aids by the time it killed you, youd probably be ready to die anyway at that age. It takes about 10 years(20-30+ if you are able to afford antiretrovirals) to kill someone normally unless it progresses to full blow AIDS then you are dead in a few months.

If I remember correctly it wasn't partially eaten; only prepared by someone with aids.
Considering my roommate's blood cells are so small his blood is considered toxic*... and I eat his food all the time... I'm not too worried.
He knows what risks come with his condition. I looked into it when I learned of the condition.
First time meeting a person... sure would be a bit weary "Would you like a Sandwich? BTW I have AIDs". There's questions to be asked 
*Essentially if he ever gets a disease that travels via the bloodstream he is a walking bio-hazard. If he bled on you the blood will seep through the skin because of the size of it, and you would then be infected as well. It's not fun, considering he also gets frequent nosebleeds because of this

I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers it this way... the guy offered him a sandwich he made, or half of his sandwich or something of that nature... not that his mouth had been on it.
Anyway, I had a HIV+ black gay drag queen roommate that was a chef from Louisiana, I ate a lot of food he prepared and it was damn good. He taught me how to flip an egg in the pan without a spatula. He's dead now (AIDS) and I miss hearing him say "Girl, get off my dress." whenever someone got on his case about something. RIP Horace
I also don't have HIV, and neither does my daughter who lived there too. I do have to say one of the most ignorant comments I ever got from a friend was "Aren't you worried about having your daughter around him?" I said, "Why would I be worried?" she replied "Because he's gay, do you think she's safe?" I laughed "He's gay, not a child molester! There is just as much chance of him hurting her as any other person in the world, as a matter of fact, your husband beats you... I'd be FAR more worried of living with him!"

If most of us sat at the roulette table and watched the last 5 spins in a row land on black, we'd bet on red. Most of us won't drink out of a toilet even though the water is cleaner than what we get out of an ice machine. Most of us can name more parts of an animal we wouldn't want to eat than the equally sanitary (and sometimes healthier) parts we discard. Most of us consider being urinated on a justification for assault but will gladly shake your filthy hand. From a scientific standpoint, none of that makes sense.
You're confusing emotional response with a scientific and rational assessment of actual harm. Plenty of people would be alarmed by the prospect of sharing food with an HIV+ person. I'd bet money that every single HIV+ person is all too familiar with a look of hesitation over a simple handshake. People got on Sith because after and away from the emotional response and "grossness", he really thought he had a scientifically sound and rational justified reason to bring physical and economic harm on this guy.
Let's draw a parallel to homosexuality. It's one thing for someone to feel awkward, for one reason or another, because you find out a coworker is gay. It's another to mount a crusade trying to get that coworker fired and beaten because "he didn't tell you he was gay and now your whole relationship is undermined with homosexual undertones and you might have caught the gay or accidentally been involved in some sort of intimate act with a homosexual because you thought it was just heterosexual joking".
People mock Sith for his willful ignorance and poorly justified vendetta not because he found an AIDs sandwich unappetizing...

Edit: And the chance is not low. The chance is nothing. The 0.03% chance of a transmission after you stab an HIV+ patient with a hollow needle and immediately inoculate your body with that blood is low. The chance of an inoculating dose of HIV seeping onto a sandwich, surviving that habitat long enough to make it to your mouth, climbing out from the lettuce, and entering an open lesion in your mouth or esophagus to enter your circulation before it's destroyed by your stomach acid is nothing.

oh also, i'd eat an aids sandwich. i share food with my dog. and i don't mean i break off a piece of whatever. i do that most of the time but if i'm eating a popsicle or something and he comes over and stares at it, i'll let him taste it. i've eaten off of a spoon that my cat was licking and drank water after my cat pushed her entire face into my cup to drink it as well. i know the disgusting things they put into their mouths. i've seen them all licking their junk and buttholes. someone who had hiv making a sandwich would not turn me off.
that said though, i won't eat anything that a human baby has put it's disgusting fingers on. that's so goddamn gross it makes me retch.

If it's a tasty burger/sandwich and I'm hungry, I'll eat the sandwich regardless of who made it or it having bites out of it.
If someone (AIDS or not) bleeds, spits, or sexually tarnishes the sandwich, I'll pass.
But I would NOT share drinks with someone who obviously has the herp (outbreak). Just sayin.
