Its not a revolution for freedom or democracy, its a revolution against the evils of the west. They hate the fact the government is secular or is starting to open up to western ideals.

Osama bin laden was a revolter.

They are throwing tens of billions at their citizens to buy them off.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-18/saudi-arabian-king-abdullah-boosts-spending-as-protests-sweep-arab-world.html

"Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah ordered sweeping increases in spending, including $67 billion on housing and funds for the military and religious groups that backed the government’s ban on domestic protests.

The new package, which follows a $36 billion handout announced on Feb. 23, will probably help prevent unrest from gathering pace in the kingdom, analysts said. A call for a March 11 demonstration in the kingdom failed to materialize after the government deployed troops at designated assembly points for the rally and senior clerics denounced protests as un-Islamic."

Protests have been strongest in places where the military controls the government, which oddly enough is one element Saudi Arabia lacks.

That and Saudis don't screw around when it comes to protests.

The Saudi royalty has massive amounts of money. They produce something like eight million barrels of oil PER DAY.

At current prices that earns them somewhere close to a BILLION dollars A DAY. Just from selling oil. I'm sure they don't bring such high numbers on a daily basis, but they earn a crapton of money. It's easy to keep the population happy when you earn so much money, and have such power from a single resource.

The end result of the revolution in the Middle East will be more radical regimes. Instead of evil secular regimes there will be evil theocratic regimes.

Clearly this sandy realm was made tranquil by a big sloppy Bush kiss. Dubya brings peace with each pucker.

Bread and circuses ... the problem is if this social welfare persists people are going to expect this like a right from their government .... and woah be the government if they cut this money off.

The result of the US exporting its excess printed money .... disinflation is the policy of exporting dollars fast enough out of the US to ensure the prices do not rise as fast here in the US as they are doing now to the countries we are exporting to.

Enriching the military and the priesthood has always been an effective way of keeping the peasants in check.

Saudi Arabia is less modernized than most other states. As late as 30 years ago most of the population were still tribal nomads. These days they almost all live in cities but urban culture is still a new phenomenon. With the exception of a very small handful of mostly holy cities, there are not thousands-of-years-old traditions of urban culture and governance like there are in most Arab countries.

It also has massive oil revenues and a population that, although quickly growing, is still quite small.
