Peyton Manning's 14-year career as a member of the Indianapolis Colts is coming to an end.

Sources close to the team told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the announcement will come at a news conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday with both Manning and owner Jim Irsay in attendance.

More from ESPN.com

Kuharsky Ending the Peyton Manning era in Indianapolis is the ultimate business decision by Jim Irsay and the Colts, writes Paul Kuharsky. Blog

The decision to pass on the $28 million bonus owed Manning and not to pick up the four remaining years on his contract means Manning will become a free agent, and sources told Mortensen that he intends to continue to play.

The four-time league MVP missed the entire 2011 season after having his third neck surgery in 19 months, a fusion of two vertebrae. His doctors have medically cleared him to resume his career and Manning has increased his throwing regimen.

Several sources have told ESPN during the past month that Manning's throwing strength has dramatically improved as his nerves continue to regenerate following his latest neck surgery Sept. 8. Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed the single-level cervical fusion, has stated publicly that he has cleared Manning to resume his playing career.

Manning has broken all of Indianapolis' career records for quarterbacks and had never missed a start before last season. He's taken the Colts to the playoffs 11 times, captured seven AFC South titles in eight years, won two AFC championships, one Super Bowl title and a Super Bowl MVP Award.

The Colts have the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft and are likely to draft former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck or former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I'll calmly sit back and wait for alllllllll those people who said they would take Luck and sit him behind Manning.

I have been saying since last summer that you simply do not do that with a #1 pick. Period.

You also don't let one of the best players of all time walk if he can still play.

Only the future will tell if this was the right choice or not.

You cannot have almost 1/4 of your salary cap tied up in QB's for a season either if you did want Luck. Its just not viable long term to waste that much cap space on 2 players especially when they have so many other needs.

Well I for one cant talk. It is hard when you've had a QB whos been so successful for so long. It is the right move for the Colts though, they'd be bad next year with or without Manning. Best time to start fresh and move on.

it's going to be some time before the Colts are playoff contenders again. and it's going to be amazing to watch the speculation and controversy with the constant comparisons to manning in the meanwhile.

we saw this season just how good this team is w/o manning at QB, and i promise you Luck isn't going to deliver from the get-go. you don't go from worst to first (or even fifth), with a rookie QB.

The new CBA significantly limits the cap impact of rookie contracts. They could be a contender again in 2-3 years if they work it right, and Manning will likely be near the end by then.

I gotta give Peyton some credit for showing up to his own 'cut conference', I don't think I've seen that before.

he couldnt pay the bonus, and unless it was a hugely incentive deal then he either was going to retire, get cut, or play in a Colt uniform. it is going to be difficult to see him in another uniform if he chooses to go into free agency...everyone is speculating on where he will go, but retirement is still on the table. the reports on his progress is good, but he's throwing under controlled circumstances to Clark, Collie, and Stokely at Duke....

any GM is going to have a lot of questions about his health and gameday playability...the coach is going to have retool his offense for Manning's playstyle. (not a easy thing to do)

and his legacy, Manning does care about his Legacy...Unitas went to SD, Montana to KC, and Farve...we all know that debacle. IMO, its still a possiblity that he will retire.

i remember going to Manning's first game at the RCA dome...he lost to the Jimmy Johnson/Dan Marino's Dolphins...and if i remember he had one TD and over 300 yds for the game. who knew he would end up the icon that he is today...

its a sad day here in Indiana.

You assume too much.

If Manning goes on to compete and is healthy, he absolutely did not do the right thing.

If he winds up retiring or not recovering, or going somewhere and making a fool of himself, then he did.

Or can you see the future shock

edit: There are easily 5-6 different scenarios that could play out from here. Not all of which make Irsay's decision the right one.

Why is so much of the media and the NFL fanbase automatically assuming that what is going to happen is "Well Luck is the second coming of Jesus Christ so **** Peyton Manning."

Inevitable, unfortunately.

Too much cash to pay with too little certainty.

I just hope that wherever Manning ends up, he won't get permanently, severely hurt. Neck injuries are just scary.

It doesn't matter if Luck is the second coming or not, it would have been retarded to pay 50 million in QB salaries this year. Realistically the Colts are so full of holes right now that even with Manning they weren't going to be real contenders. Even if Luck busts you are paying him an amount you can live with and stiill start to rebuild the team which had to happen regardless. If he busts you cut him and cut losses, at least you were able to use the 40 million this year alone on Mannings cap hit and add desperately needed pieces.

I'm worried the Lions are heading down a similar path. They have to resign Calvin Johnson and Stafford right after. Not to mention that Stafford was one of the last "Golden Children" to get those huge #1 pick contracts so I'm sure he is used to making a lot more than he might be offered this time around.

So go the Lions.... their #1 overall QB selection turns out to be pretty good and by the time he is healthy enough to play.... he bolts. plain

Now I'm curious if Wayne is going to stay? Heard a lot of talk about package deals. I fear a lot of dumpster fires for several years here in Indy.

Wouldn't be shocked if Wayne went too. They have SO many holes to fill, and they won't contend for a few years.....so best to get in younger players and build them up together. Like they did 10-14 years ago.

I have no respect for the Colts anymore.

I know its business, but after promising to pay him as a top tier qb, then cutting the guy cause he gets hurt, is pathetic.

They just paid him like 30 million dollars, even though they knew he was hurt, to sit and rehab in their world class facilities with their world class doctors... I think they are pretty much even.
