I don't know if there has been a thread on this but I just finished reading it and I highly recommend it. Even if you hate apple. He is a fascinating man and the biography does a really good job of capturing both the good and the bad. It is by no means a flawless book but the story and the character are exceedingly compelling.
I don't want to say to much because I wouldn't do the book justice and I may just spoil things but the book did a really good job at establishing what he contributed. It is also a book that touches on a vast array of really good issues from education in the future to the importance of those who make products and a whole bunch of other stuff. When he died I remember seeing all of these books about him and thought it was crazy but you could write a large number of books based on what he did.
You can talk about early computers, early gui, management, motivation, speaking, retail, celebrity, parenting, and on and on.

The start is a little slow but it helps set the stage for the rest. There is also a point in the middle where it becomes clear they didn't have time to edit it properly because it was rushed out around his death.

I would read it but I heard it is a rehash of things I already know from previous articles or books. Jobs was a perfectionist but "real artists ship." He didn't bathe when he was younger, wore crappy clothes, fasted for weeks on end, was mean to a lot of people, strange, vindictive and incredibly creative with a good vision. He was adopted but eventually found out he had a sister, was a good tipper to his father but didn't know he was his dad. Is there more to it than that?

Is there more to it than that?
A biography is far different than some hit pieces. It creates a much different picture because the picture is more complete. There was plenty in the book that I had heard before but it never really did him justice or his history justice. For example the fact that he was a jerk. How was he able to be such a jerk? How did it impact his life at various points? Does he actually ever really change?
A lot of people will avoid the book simply based on just how strong of a personality he was. That is amazing in itself. The love for him and the hate for him is fascinating.

There was definitely a hippie part of his personality. His own personality contradicted with itself on multiple levels. He could be both a hippie and completely not one.

The fact that Steve Jobs creates this kind of reaction is a testament to who he was. Which is incredibly strange IMO.

The cult of steve jobs
Just like the cult of facebook.
I am not a part of the cult by any means but I am also not part of the anti Steve Jobs cult either. The emotions on both sides are fascinating to see.
I admit my parents did own a Mac back in the day and I remember going over to friend's homes to play on their computers and being shocked at how far behind they were. When they finally caught up years later there was wide spread joy but most of that came from what they copied from the Mac. I also remember going to the computer store to buy games and seeing a 100 great games, none of which I could buy.
If you can step back and be objective about it there is no doubt that Steve Jobs had an impact in a way like some people don't. That includes the impact of Woz who was a brilliant guy and should get a lot of credit for what he did. Taken as a whole though it is clear that Jobs contributed a lot but it is harder to quantify. Which is where a lot of the hate and love probably comes from.

I'm not much of a biography reader, and I definitely avoid bios published right after a celebrity death. I'll likely read a Jobs biography in about ten years or so, let the dust settle a bit and let people's feelings and privacy concerns cool off and the research will yield better, and likely more accurate, information.
Also, paperback.

pirates of silicon valley is a cool movie. i have nothing against apple( im typing this on an iphone). its just the cult of personality and apple fanatics that makes me roll my eyes. bill gates is worth 60bln... jobs was only worth 6bln. there are a lot of special people. and phili farnsworth, the inventor of radar, tv, electron microscope - big things we all depend on for so much is pretty much unknown. cult of personality just gets on my nerves... people are sheep.

That would depend on how interesting their life was. Someone can have a very boring life and then do something great. That doesn't mean their biography is a good read.
Also the claim that he didn't contribute something worthwhile is a major thing that makes the book interesting.
He is also psychotic and is one of those people that was kind of a mad genius.

Sorry he's just not relevant in the greater span of things, I read biographic books that will supply me with knowledge that has historical relevancy.. The rise of a hipster hack is not my idea of relevant. I just finished a book on Bismark which was very enlightening when it comes to why Europe evolved the way it did during the 1900's, it's not a popular historical piece more a historical essay. If I want to be entertained I'll read fantasy

His character and story is more fascinating than any fantasy story. It is also real.
He also interacts with other interesting and impactful people. You don't only learn about Jobs but the people that he worked with. Wozniak for example, his role with Pixar (although the Pixar documentary was better), the Mac team, and more.

Find out for yourself, was a really good read... Also gives you an insight into how imperial Germany worked and how it evolved. More or less by the will of a single man, he also instituted the first social reforms that lead to pensions and such. I think the common historical take on Bismark is way to slanted because of what happened later in Germany.. He was nationalistic and extremely conservative but he wasn't a Nazi. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bismarck-Profiles-Power-Katharine-Lerman/dp/0582037409 given out by Pearson and Longman I do believe they cater to universities mostly.
