If they keep on doing these smart pvp and pve changes and keep on providing me with good endgame content I'll stay 6 months, I'm also curious what Legacy will bring.

Hell I'm working on Battlemaster right now and I'm about to start my second character, I have never started a new character in a MMORPG because the leveling was just too damn tedious. But in SWTOR the leveling is fun and not harsh at all, the quests are interesting and the exping is swift.. And the most important part is that the Class quests and story are EPIC!

Next class is either a Juggernaut or a Sith assassin.

I unsubbed when I wanted to do a flashpoint and sat and spammed /1 in the fleet for over an hour with no replies.

I'll resub when a proper LFG system is implemented.

I don't understand why people still make MMOs, are they that delusional?

Lets make a clone of WoW then act surprised when nobody wants to leave the game they've invested five years of their miserable in to in order to invest the next five in to it.

1. Yes, and all of those people the new MMOs are trying to attract have friends playing WoW. That is probably the #1 reason they all fail, why build a new community when you already have one in WoW?

2. I liked it. The character progression was 100% what I was predicting and I thought the plot was a little too custom tailored to drive the character development but despite it all being a touch convenient it was a good book. Not as good as 5 and 6 but better than the last one or the banshee one.

I find it depressing that 364 days out of the year I don't have a new Hollows book to read.

Speaking of books, have you read Kevin Hearn's series? I think you will like it, the women are all lying bitches and the man is forced to condescend to them constantly then either kill them for being deceitful or bed them.

TOR is already hemorraging subscribers. They'll be very lucky if they've got 500k by the end of the year.

The article you linked to seems to have a factual error right at the top, too: The CEO actually said that they've sold 1.7 million boxes, and only that a "majority" of those were subscribers. A majority of 1.7 million could be as low as 850,000 people. That would be a pisspoor release for such a major MMO. Maybe someone actually has the quote where the CEO said there were 1.7 million subscribers.

The game is coming up on it's three month anniversary, and is coming to the time where the games success will actually be truely measured. Once the 3-month and 6-months come up for renewal, I expect that you will see subs drop precipitously.

The game already has a rep as a glorified single player game, and anyone knowledgable about MMO's will know that about TOR.

The question already has become whether they can continue to draw in enough new subs to offset the ones they lose when people get bored of paying a subscription fee for a single player game.

End games that revolve around dailies are not my cup of tea. PvP in SWTOR is so bad it's not even worth the effort.

As succinct a summary of the game as anyone could write.

I really, really hate the daily quest model. It is a horrible way to do progression.

I think everyone hates this grinding model. But, it can be changed. This game has so much right in its infancy, I think it will be a standard for awhile.

I know people said wow was great 1-60 and then awful at the level cap but man, there has never been a game remotely like SWTOR in terms of how much the game experience degenerates once you hit the level cap.

It's like playing two totally different games.

The endgame is empty and it is highlighted because the 1-50 is a delight. Just keep rerolling until they get more content. You also have to have fun people to play with. I have the Old Timers. They do things like making an all trooper army and and all bounty hunter hurmies. yesterday, they had a crafta palooza to gear people leveling. A good guild is essential for a quality MMO experience

Not really. AOC had nothing to do anywhere above level 40 or so. So it wasn't such a shock to get to 80. You could tell it was coming.

SWTOR is a great single-player game with some minor multiplayer functionality until you hit 50. Then the single-player game becomes awful and the multiplayer functionality doesn't get any better.

Anyone who thinks WoW was better 1-60 shouldn't be playing an MMO. They should go play Skyrim or Dragon Age and stay inside their comfort zone.

WoW was decent fun leveling the first time, but to compare that boring essentially solo PvE experience to the PvP or raids is a farce.

I agree with that. I never understood that criticism of wow.

But I totally feel that way about SWTOR. Because it is so clearly a single player game with some minor multiplayer functionality.

Are they really hemorrhaging subscribers or is it just that you don't want to play it anymore. I can't tell the difference in gaming threads like this: people go all in, love and rave about it, get bored, leave it, then say the game failed.

There are a LOT less people playing than there were 30 days ago. But that's to be expected with any new MMO and I don't know how much of it is really people cancelling as opposed to just putting in fewer hours per week.

Somewhere I read that 50% retention rate after the first month is actually pretty good for MMOs.

I got cautious after AOC, and even more after Rift (that I actually liked until I went to pvp)

Yes and no. DAOC had horrible, horrible combat mechanics at the personal level.

Those horrible mechanics actually created a pretty good group combat dynamic, though. When you had a good balanced group of 8 things clicked into place pretty well.

Leveling your first character to 50 back in 2002 was a pure grinding hellfest. Anyone who remembers it differently is wearing bright rose colored glasses. I spent some weekends eight hours a day grinding werewolves in Malmohus and was level 49.5 when Darkness Falls was released. At least it was fun to get my last half a level, but before that, grinding Raumarik and Malmohus was a boring nightmare.

PvP on the other hand...I will never have a more fun gaming experience than that, and that makes me very sad. I spent months at level 35 just solo assassinating people in the Hib frontier. I had to force myself to stop and get back to leveling.

Is it even worth playing? I played beta and was disappointed. I might wait like 5 months and then give it a shot. Doubt I'll try it still though. Last hope with MMO's is gw2

It comes down to community...lots of fun people that had no problem to suicide and lose 3-4 hours
worth of exp just to go to defend realm
When my paladin finally hit 50, I got around 50 people to come help with level 50 epic, and I think

I must be missing something here.

1. WoW had over 13 million subs and still has > 10 million
2. STWOR "could secure 1 million long term subs"
3. ???
4. SWTOR IS TEH WOW KILLER I CALLED IT!

There's a pretty good argument to be made that the grind was a major contributing factor to DAOC's 'community,' and the lack of that grind in WoW and other games is a major reason why the community feel just isn't as strong in those games.

You would sit in the same spot for hours on end with people and actually get to know them via chat because there wasn't shit else to do besides killing the same spawns over and over and over and over and over

That was certainly true of EQ1, which had an even more tight-knit (but much worse) community than DAOC, and a much more extreme grind too. The nice thing about DAOC was that with a few exceptions the gameplay actually encouraged you to work WITH your realmmates instead of against them. EQ1 was a capitalist anarchists's paradise, all about everyone out for themseleves and every guild competing against every other guild for scarce lewt resources.

God that was retarded. I can't believe I ever did that. Leveling in current MMOs is far superior. If only they could make it a bit harder and still stay away from grinding, it would be perfect.

It would be great if it happened, maybe it can take 10-15% percent (of market share) for a while.
(though Im sceptical)

I mean the current totally stale MMO market because of WoW is pretty uninspiring...

I will agree that when Malmohus was released, Midgard/Percival was in dire shape. The Hibs were cowardly beaten down by the dominating Albs, and we were next in line getting the beatdown. We retreated for quite a while and all got our mains to 50 together in Malmohus, so those of us that emerged at 50 from there ventured out in the frontier together, and having already spent a hundred hours killing NPC mobs together used that same technique to come back and beat the ever living hell out of the Albs, re-establishing dominance on the server.

Hmmmm, I never really looked at the grinding as the one aspect that brought the community together. Grinding was kind of like boot camp, where the evil drill instructor beat everyone down until they banded together to survive and came out stronger in the end.

And they expressed 'disappointment' in the investors report about the number of boxes they sold. Already it seems like TOR is dropping off the radar. And there are several potential good MMO's slated for the next year, so it's not like they've got a lot of time to fix it up enough to retain subscribers.

And the for the record, I never played TOR, I never went all in (or even a little bit in), and I'd be happy to explain to you about what constitutes success or failure for a MMO.

I remember more names from DAOC than all other MMOs I played
put together, and it was 10+ other MMOs

SWTOR would probably do good if it would be just another MMO by some startup company
but they spent crapload of money on it, and it still looks unpolished compared to
Rift, for example

Hope it won't be Biowares Heavens Gate

Dude standing at the entrance solo'ing wyverns waiting for a group spot to come up or enough players standing with you to make another group (providing all the spots were not camped) made Mid/Perc, in those early months everyone over level 40 knew everyone else at least in passing because of it.

Edit : Also did not renew my StarWoW subscription to actually post something about the OP.

Derasio Katain! You and I killed many Albs together in Emain back in the day. Having been one of the first Shadowblades on Percival and one of the first in PvP, I remember taking 20 minutes to solo stealth run to the Hib mile gates in order to spy on incoming Hibby forces and relay that information to our larger forces back in Emain.

Imagine that, no stealth zerg, and a secondary useful function for rogues in a battle situation. Intel!

You'll never find that again in any MMO.

sad

Indeed, same on my scout, when there would be relic raids and such, there would
be whole network of stealthers all around the RVR zones just to relay info
In all other MMOs you simply have no reason to do things together, except
your favorite 6, 12 or 24 man instances

Derasio Katain! You and I killed many Albs together in Emain back in the day. Having been one of the first Shadowblades on Percival and one of the first in PvP, I remember taking 20 minutes to solo stealth run to the Hib mile gates in order to spy on incoming Hibby forces and relay that information to our larger forces back in Emain.

Imagine that, no stealth zerg, and a secondary useful function for rogues in a battle situation. Intel!

You'll never find that again in any MMO.

sad

Midgard's stealth crew was the absolute bomb, the way you guys co-ordinated and related info both on offense and defense won us the day so many times.
