Since I don't know any of you, personally, nor do I give a rats ass about exposing this-or-that...

Don't know if anyone remembers "Isn't $1,500 quite a bit for Christmas?" post, but come to find out my brother-in-law was writing himself checks out of my grandmother's checking book.

This isn't new. Starting in August, we had a hunch that my brother-in-law was stealing for as long as 2 years. For over 2 years we've had as little as $10 missing to as much as $700 missing at a time from the house. Of course, we thought about it but all we could do was scratch our heads and wonder because you wouldn't suspect a family member - well, in legality terms.
Even though we were catching-on to his thieving in August, we couldn't blatantly come out and tell him hes a thief - needed evidence - and it finally came in early January when he wrote a $400 check to himself out of my grandmother's checking book. My aunt saw it when she was doing my grandmother's finances.

Rewind to Christmas of 2010 (a little more than a year ago) and things are starting to make more sense. My brother-in-law got a $1,500 CASH bonus from work. My grandmother was missing $1,500 CASH she planned on giving to family & friends for Christmas. She was so upset that she was balling her eyes out while combing through her house for the cash. Wonder where it went?! (rhetorical question)

Fast-forward to now - my sister had a minor altercation with him for 2 weeks after she discovered he was stealing, but is now back with him. My brother-in-law sought therapy and his shrink made him believe that his thieving was to due to his childhood and depression. He stopped talking to his brothers because his shrink made him believe that his family were to blame. How disgusting is that? That made us even more pissed. He sent us all letters through the mail; we pissed on them and threw 'em out. He was able to reconcile with my grandmother because she doesn't want any fighting, period, but he will never be forgiven by my mother, brother, sister, step-dad, and myself.

There's more to the story, but that's the gist of it! We sure do get the winners!! hahaha

No drugs involved. We believe this is a new kind of 'disease' - the 'I need the next best thing to impress' disease. That $400 check he wrote to himself went to my sister's birthday present. For that iPad 3 or 4. Whatever the new generation is.

Kid I hate to say it but after 3 years worth of psych and child development classes, most psychological issues stem from childhood issues that haven't been resolved, just repressed.

it might be due to childhood issues, but those issues are HIS and the rest of his family isn't to BLAME for things he has trouble overcoming. My sister blames everyone else in our family for her problems, even though she is the cause of it all... so I get what kid is talking about... the shrink be it directly or indirectly is allowing this guy to justify his behavior by blaming other people for it.

Sorry to say, but only YOU are responsible for your own actions, regardless of your past.

Yes

does it involve any jr or sr level classes, or you using your intro to psych class as your base for knowledge on the subject.

I think there are a lot of people in the upcoming generations that are going to need a lot of "suck it up buttercup" life lessons.

Too many people think the world revolves around them because their parents did.

Very true. And now that's hes blowing off his family's side - how does that make things right? That psych hes seeing is a f***ing tard. He should be sending his pity letters to them, not us.

We were hoping my grandmother would call for the police for fraudulent checks, but shes trying to play peacekeeper. Understandable. We can't call police for theft because it was over the coarse of 2 years. And we wouldn't have proof, though, we know it was him.

What a giant crock, even psychology is getting into "blame someone else, anyone, but the person who's doing bad things."

JFC, personal responsibility is not even nonexistent, it's being diagnosed away now, too.

In his letter to my step-father, which was obviously suggested by the shrink, he said he thinks of my step-father as his dad, despite a 6 year age difference, and he wished he could watch sports with him every Sunday - which he had 10 years to do LOL

Yeah, the psychologist made things worse. Plus, I never heard of a psychologist for kleptomania. And then being diagnosed with depression.

Now that he has my sister back, I doubt hes still seeking the psychologist. We haven't talked to him in over 2 months, so, I wouldn't know. And we don't speak his name around my sister. Their kids know all about this, too, and they're not too upset. They know we hate their dad and hes not allowed over the house anymore.

That doesn't sound like kleptomania.

And while the therapist may be terrible, I don't know why that's the first conclusion to jump to rather than thinking maybe the jackass who steals from his grandmother has convoluted the situation.

There's a difference between "You have childhood issues which you're dealing with through theft. Let's talk about that so you're aware of why you're doing these terrible things, when you're most susceptible, and how you can better control your behavior"

and

"Your family is to blame. They MADE you steal. Don't talk to them anymore!"

I'd gamble he was told the former and twisted it to the latter to avoid feeling like the f--k up that he is...

kleptomaniacs are probably also liars. doubt his therapist are saying anything like that at all, just making !@# to fool your sister.

I think part of it stems from my sister - she doesn't like my brother-in-law's side of the family, so, she essentially turned him against them, though, I'm sure his childhood wasn't perfect, which made him an easy push-over.

Nobody has a perfect childhood. And its no excuse for him. I just can't believe he'd allow my grandmother to sit there, cry her eye's out when he had her money the whole time. He was with her when that went down. What kind of conscious does he have? And he always threw others under the bus - one time it was me and one time it was my cousin. Why me? Easy target. I smoke marijuana occasionally, and spent 95% of my time in the dorms drinking and smoking. My family isn't used to that. And my cousin dealt had drug issues 2 years ago, hes sober now, but my brother-in-law threw out the idea that my cousin was back on drugs and looking for cash. As far as we know, my cousin has never stolen but it was easily believable. Until now. We know it wasn't my cousin.

So, he destroyed the trust in the family over the coarse of 2 years. Its nothing breath-taking, but never had anything eye-opening like this happen. My grandfather (Opa) was in the military for over 25 years, and I know if he was still with us, he'd find my brother-in-law and beat him the s*** out of him. He did not put up with bulls*** especially when it came to money or family.

Subject: Have you ever known a kleptomaniac? I do! Brother-in-law stealing for 2-3 years
Weird timing on how that happened. Maybe I'm thinking about it too much. But now that my sister is PUBLICLY saying shes back with him, it kinda bugs me.

He did not put up with bulls*** especially when it came to money or family.

i would beat the snot out of the guy and kick the sister out of the family for even going back with loser thief.

I'd do SO much more than that! I haven't seen him in more than 2 months, but if I did see him again, I feel like I'd go to jail for assault. Knock him out COLD
