i will make them and then freeze them in batches.

In my experience, it's Filipino cuisine. Because of the large presence of Filipino folks in/around Naval bases, there were always lumpia at events we attended when I was growing, as well. Here on the west coast, it's very easy to find.

The Navy is the only reason I was aware of the term. As you said, lots of Filipino guys in the Navy, lots of lumpia at every party and holiday gathering.

They struck me as rather like tamales in mexican families/groups, in the sense of, "Here ya go, grandma made THOUSANDS of them last weekend . . . "
