My doc prescribed them to me to help ease menstrual cramps. The cramps were debilitating- would literally take me out of commission for a full day, sometimes two. Some people have migraines so bad that they throw up because of the pain, and that's what it was like for me, only because the cramps were so painful.
So for me, and many other women, it has absolutely nothing to do with not wanting to get pregnant.
As ridiculous as it is, though, you know what would solve the problem? Start doing separate packaging. Label one "birth control" and label the other "hormone treatments" and make everyone cover the "hormone treatments" (ostensibly for a medical condition and not birth control). Then the religious nuts would have to quit bitching. "But we don't belieeeeeeve in birth control!" "Excellent, we're not asking you to, or to cover it, only to cover this separate legitimate treatment option for other conditions."

Edit: Obviously there may be a reason for some women to take a specific name brand to address a specific medical condition, but for the vast majority of women, the $4.00 version should work just fine.

There is a reason why there are so many birth control pills: the vast majority of women cannot take the same pill.
I can take one pill that will work perfectly for me, switch to another for cost or lower dosage of hormone, and it could make me very ill. This exact thing happened to me. I switched to try a lower dosage and it ended up making me mental.

It goes against my better judgement but I'll comment on Limbaugh
His apology is genius trolling. It apologizes for the language but not the content. So it was okay to make assumptions about this woman's sexual behaviors. It is okay to ask for video in compensation for contraceptives. It is okay to assume sex is bad and women, not both genders, are responsible.
But one should use the proper language when making these statements.
Liberals know this but are often too angry to articulate that the message is offensive more so than the language. So they remain incensed, which is what Limbaugh wants.
Conservatives fall back on "he apologized " and think we should move on. They blame any continuation on the liberals and the media.

The Pill is the ONLY thing that ever worked on my acne. I wish I could have taken it as a teenager -- it would have spared me so much pain and humiliation, but my parents are staunch Catholics and they would be horrified.
