If any event marks the day the military’s gay ban was really over, it came last week, when Marine CorpsSgt. Brandon Morgan, in uniform, jumped onto his boyfriend and the two engaged in a passionate kiss at an on-base military-family homecoming.
A friend photographed the embrace, which later was posted on the “Gay Marine†Facebook page and triggered an outpouring of support — and some dissent.
For the armed service’s most tradition-bound service, the one that most opposed lifting the ban last year, the transition seemed complete when a spokeswoman at Marine Corps Base Hawaii told a local TV station, “It’s your typical homecoming photo.â€
The gay rights movement is applauding.
“The photo humanizes us who currently serve in the military and are gay,†said Air ForceLt. Josh Seefried, who co-directs the gay military group Outserve. “The excitement around the photo just goes to show how much society has come in realizing that our families are real and matter.
“The photo also visualizes a military couple who doesn’t receive the same benefits and protections other military couples have under the law,†Lt. Seefried said.
Said Zeke Stokes, spokesman for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which worked for the gay ban’s repeal: “This photo and the reaction to it once again underscores that the repeal of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is being implemented successfully and is supported widely by the American people.â€
“Don’t ask, don’t tell,†or DADT, was the policy adopted during the Clinton administration that allowed gays to serve in the military as long as they did not reveal their sexual orientation and authorities did not inquire about it. It was repealed Sept. 20.
Historic photo
Former Marines contacted by The Times were reluctant to criticize Sgt. Morgan. Some did, but did not want to be quoted on the record.
Former Marine Lt. Ilario Pantano, who fought in the “Triangle of Death†in Iraq, said: “Repealing ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ was a mistake. I have been on record about this topic from the beginning of the debate, and I am deeply disappointed in both the lawmakers and the troops, from privates to generals, that know better but were silent or even complicit in the decay of our societal or military values.
“The mission of the military is to fight and win wars not appease special interests that have spent millions to lobby for DADT repeal and use the military to force social engineering,†the former lieutenant said.
A spokesman for Marine Gen. James Amos said the commandant would have no comment on the photo.
Gen. Amos spoke out against repeal but has worked to make sure the Corps embraces it after Congress had enacted it. Marine recruiters have been required to attend at least one gay pride event.
The news media, too, generally has celebrated the photo.
ABC found the snapshot so historic that the news organization juxtaposed it with the most famous homecoming picture in U.S. military history — Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photograph for Life magazine of a sailor dipping and kissing a nurse during spontaneous V-J Day celebrations in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945.
A New York Daily News story began this way:
“A photo of a gay Marine locked in a passionate welcome home kiss with his boyfriend has gone viral, sparking a groundswell of support from backers of the military’s policy of allowing openly gay men and women to serve in the military.â€
Positive, negative comments
Sgt. Morgan, returning from six-month deployment in Afghanistan, was engaging in his first kiss with boyfriend Dalan Wells.
“We couldn’t talk, I can barely talk now, his hands went numb, my legs were shaking, our first kiss after just knowing how we felt about each other,†Sgt. Morgan told station KHON2-TV in Honolulu.
Mr. Wells said: “A friend asked, ‘Can we post it on the Gay Marines Facebook page?’ and we said, ‘Oh sure, there’s only 1,000 people on that.’ It wasn’t going to be a very big deal, but then everybody started sharing it. So then that turned into 415 shares the first day, then it’s in the thousands, now it’s everywhere.â€
Sgt. Morgan said: “My friend Sgt. Thomas Stivers, he came home and his picture was in the Hawaii Marine [base newspaper] of him kissing his wife and holding his newborn baby that was just born a few days ago. His picture is no different than mine. It is a homecoming picture. Gay, straight, lesbian — no matter who you are, love is love.â€
“All my superiors, my staff sergeants, my gunnery sergeants, my lieutenants, my officers, my captains, they’re all very ecstatic and very happy that I had somebody to come home to,†Sgt. Morgan said. “Again, gay or straight, does not matter.â€
The “Gay Marine†Facebook page posted the photo Saturday, triggering 41,229 “likes†as of Wednesday afternoon, and 10,020 comments. A sampling shows most are positive.
“This is TRUE bravery!†reads one. “The most insidious enemy we face in the struggle for equality is internalized homophobia. Kudos to any and every one who comes out for any and all to see!!â€
But one commenter wrote: “I am a Marine and this does not reflect the Marine Corps at all!! If I was to come back from a deployment and my wife jumped on me like that I’d prolly get my ass chewed because u do not do public displays of affection in uniform. … This guy was just lookin for some attention.â€
In an indoctrination slide-show presentation the Pentagon developed last year to prepare troops for the ban’s repeal, one scenario asked: What does a commander do if he sees two male Marines, or of another service, kissing in a shopping mall in civilian clothes?
The slide said the commander should ask, Is this within standards of personal and professional conduct?
The answer: “If the observed behavior crosses acceptable boundaries as defined in the standards of conduct for your unit and the Marine Corps, then an appropriate correction should be made. Your assessment should be made without regard to sexual orientation.â€

While i think it's wonderful that this could even happen (DADT was such a freaking joke, good riddance...), i do agree with the guy who said about PDA's in uniform. If a straight couple would get a bollocking for doing something, so should a gay couple. Otherwise you're taking it to the other extreme and letting gay couples get away with stuff straight couples cant. Equality should be true equality, IMO.

sounds like it makes you uncomfortable since you want to avoid the subject so much. all the more reason to rub it in your face. if i grew up with all that stigma about the way I was, having to hide my own sexuality due to the fear of what others might think, then i might flaunt it when i finally got over my fears. to be free from the fear of being judged negatively by society is a big deal if you've had that anxiety for a long time. it's a haters gonna hate gay strut.

while thats true, I think its one of those unspoken rules that only gets enforced when they have no other way to "make a point." If they cant get you with DADT they'll dig up some other ludicrous law thats "on the books" but never really enforced to cause more trouble for gay people. Thats happened not only in the armed services but in civilian cities too like ones in Texas and other places.(people being arrested under old sodomy laws and buggery laws that haven been enforced since the late 1800 to early 1900's)

it also depends on your definition of "flaunting." To some people just seeing a gay couple kiss or hold hands in public is flaunting. To me thats not, thats just being "normal" like any other straight couple would do.

I don't necessarily blame the couples in the pictures for being purposely-overt in their PDA for any reasons other than mutual affection. What *is* clear is that the re-posting re-forwarding and viral spreading of the images on the net are often accompanied by specific language that clearly explains the image's presence as attempting to make a social and/or political statement. A statement that I'm weary of hearing.

When some people find out Im gay they instantly think of the flaming homos that theyve seen in pride parades and either its a complete turn off for them and dont want to have anything to do with me or they stereotype all gay people into that one category and think that we are all like that.
Im not trying to say shame on them. If this were a different time and political climate then yeah sure it doesnt hurt anyone so more power to ya. We're already fighting an uphill battle for equality, Its kind of hard to go to Congress(or any formal/serious setting) and ask for equal treatment when you have the image of gay people running around like small children in a candy store while barely wearing any clothes in the minds of the people you are trying to convince. Very true, the extremes at the pride parade, while they are certainly allowed to express themselves in any way they feel it in fact hurts the very thing they are parading for. When people for the most part only see "gay people" in such a way it creates an image and when the image is like those linked earlier it's not a good way to show your best side. The reason that many people don't know more about gay people is that they are generally "normal" people and interact in a "normal" way and never think about it. I feel the parades would be a lot more effective if people did it dressed as they are any other day, but that is just my opinion. It would certainly shut up people who complain. The military stuff I could care less about, it's showing affection for your S/O and I'm not a huge fan of PDA from anyone but I understand the relief they felt when they were finally able to without having to worry about losing their jobs/careers.

I take it none of you guys have observed a military homecoming before? These are military people coming home from a deployment. They've been away from their families/friends/loved ones anywhere from 4-24 months. The military's PDA rules are relaxed dramatically at these events. Wives literally jump on their husbands all the time and ram their tongues down each others throats. In this regard, it's obviously no different.
But the repeal of DADT is new, which makes seeing two dudes or two chicks making out at one of these things new. It's not these 2 people that are making a statement. Yeah I mentioned this on like page one and was done with it, lol.
As for the public displays in day to day; I don't like it from anyone... gay, straight or someone loving up on their freaking dog in the park. Holding hands, a peck on the cheek or the like is cute (gay or straight) as it shows affection but any more than that is just disrespectful of those around you.
Again that is day to day. I have been the one returning during a homecoming more than once and I can tell you after 6 months or more all bets are off when you see your family for the first time and I'm cool with that.

I ignore it. We live in a free society and I don't believe that victimless behavior should be suppressed because one person doesn't "like it".
That being said, I don't agree with people shoving it down other people's throats either. Basically, if the "accepted group" can do it, then I think the "non-accepted" group should be able to do it, to the same extent as the accepted group.
So if a gay couple want to kiss in public, I don't care.
If they want to have sex in the Public Square, then they should be charged in the same way a straight couple would be.

Gay people can do whatever the hell they want to do as far as I care, but it still disgusts me on a primal level.
I think that's 'ok' as long as you don't focus on your disgust or build it into something else. Like if you see 2 guys kissing in a park, you have a choice. You can feel offended, or you can ignore it as much as possible. If you are unable to ignore 2 guys kissing, you might have some prejudice you have to deal with.
I ignore it. We live in a free society and I don't believe that victimless behavior should be suppressed because one person doesn't "like it".
That being said, I don't agree with people shoving it down other people's throats either. Basically, if the "accepted group" can do it, then I think the "non-accepted" group should be able to do it, to the same extent as the accepted group.
So if a gay couple want to kiss in public, I don't care.
If they want to have sex in the Public Square, then they should be charged in the same way a straight couple would be.
Make sense?
