What's good?

Should I go high end on one card or get two middle of the road cards and SLI/xfire them?

Never liked a dual card setup IMO. Not saying it is all bad, there are some positives to it, I just prefer a solo card setup. *shrug*

You'll get more bang for the buck on the high-end cards, which you can then SLI/crossfire later on when the card is cheaper.

SLI is more trouble then it's worth imo.

Go with a good high end card. It'll likely be more then you need anyway.

NVIDIA + Intel is still the most popular route for gaming rigs. If you've already settled on an AMD processor, you might be better of sticking to the same for graphics.

I always go to Toms Hardware and look at their graphs. Then I just find the best card for gaming at the amount I want to spend.

Almost always better to just get a better card and sell your old one than to crossfire/sli it. SLI is pretty much just a waste to be honest unless you're trying to benchmark your machine with the best stuff possible

Is that an SLI issue? Got a guy here at the office who has two cards in a xfire setup and the performance boost was significant...

Well it is a issue when you're doing your bang for your buck, cause even buying old cards and putting them together usually will cost you in the long run than just replacing an old card with a new one

Adding a card in SLi or crossfire doesn't double its performance, and some games out there (albeit mostly bad ones) don't even recognize the 2nd card making it a waste or don't utilize it to where it is useful

TO me, and I guess this is more a matter of opinion, you get better performance cheaper when you just keep one card to upgrade and resale

Well yeah but for gaming you hit a wall, there is a trade off on cost, moving your bottle neck around and such.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html
Was looking at this - shows the performance, price... The 8150 is nestled right in there and the price is just screaming at you...

When you switch over to this view: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html#cpuvalue - you see the 8150 really standing out.

But even if you find a one for one comparable intel cpu, then you have to factor in available mobo and the available feature sets...

I think I am getting a lot more bang for my buck with the ASUS 990FX / the 8150 / and getting that high end vid card. Right now tossing around either a HD 6950 or 6970. Again I just don't see the value in getting a 7950 or 7970, just too expensive....

I have the Sabertooth, and I love it. Paired it with the 1090T though, as that's what was available at the time. I love this mobo - especially the UEFI BIOS. Debating on whether I wanna pick up a Bulldozer or wait for the upcoming CPU (Piledriver, was it?) that's supposed to be a significant improvement.

See, that's what I love about AMD - much better with unlocking processors and video cards (6950 2GB card in my rig now, it's a downclocked 6970 once you unlock the shaders, then overclock and bam...6970 for less $). Also more open about backwards compatibility on processor/motherboard combos, where Intel loves to drop a completely new socket rather often.

AMD > intell

thats the CPU i bought
it friggin rocks
and i bet none of the intell fanbois would be able to tell my machine isnt an intell

well, aside from the fact that it runs smooth

I just think the AMD has more legroom for future growth - and same with the mobo...

However - if IF I did go with say an i5-2500 (which is about the same price point, about 30-40 bucks more), what mobo is recommended and has leg room for future growth?

Not sure here. I just go with midrange ones with lots of output interfaces and it doesn't blow up everything thats connected to it. I like the ASUS bios a lot. Also if you get a UEFI you can set up an ssd with a GPT boot sector instead of the normal MBR. GPT you'll notice slightly faster boot times with and they're not limited like MBR is when it comes to future hard disk sizes (which is still way into the TBs)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131790

That one looks kinda cool. I wouldn't get it but I am a cheap ass and probably don't really recognize the reason to have an amazing motherboard

I had work buy me a I7 HP..and have a 6850 card in it running 3 monitors.

SWTOR seems to be REALLY processor dependent and not GPU dependent. I get 70ish fps on it.

At home I ust have a quad core anda 6970 ATi card. I get like 40ish fps on it. And its a slide show when I am zerging it in Ilum.

Seriously, is there a dearth of games out there at this moment in time making it unfeasible to upgrade? I don't think I've ever seen this before. I'm using a vid card I bought a year ago that was already old when I bought it and I can still play every game I play on "high" settings without skipping a beat.

I always laugh at this type of suggestion. You'll end up in the same position in the future... buy another single end card or SLI what you have now. Then Zig will come back again and say just get another single end card!

Let me make it easy for you bud.

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_displays/msi_gtx560-ti_oc_sli_review/7

TL:DR version using fc2:

SLI 560 ti setup:
avg fps: 141.2
price: $440ish

gtx 580:
avg fps: 92.2
price: $460ish

gtx 580 SLI:
avg fps: 146.3
price: $900+

screw the future. you can delay the inevitable upgrade with that setup.

A lot of good stuff in the thread. Thanks all. I am taking a break on this for the next few day. I will prolly resume the build Sunday and post the final config Sunday night/Monday.

I wasn't able to find a good breakdown like this before. But it does kinda mirror what I decided last night.

HD 6950 or 6970 is a high end card but a generation old at this point. I can pick up a 6950 for right around 200 bucks and that will do me good for awhile. And then I can just pick up a second one later when they are $150 bucks xfire/ SLi them together and be good to go for another few years...

Don't forget that an SLI setup adds cost to the rig in unanticipated ways (more cooling, more draw on your ps, more electricity draw, higher temperatures, etc.) and shortens it's life in various ways. Like overclocking.

The Performance increase you get won't be noticeable, but the wear and tear on the PC will be.

SLI is just one more thing to go wrong, I have a 6970 and have no problem running any games I've tried smoothly.
