i'm running a c2d 3ghz, 8 gigs ram and a gtx 260. i am only interested in nvidia cards and i can't afford to build an entirely new rig atm. i think i can still get some improvement on this with a video card upgrade.

$250 GTX 560 Ti
$300 GTX 560 Ti 448 Core
$350 GTX 570

The 560 Ti 448 probably the best choice of the bunch.

and the processor won't bottle neck it eh? thinking i was worried i'd only be able to get a slight upgrade in video before i had to replace my mb/processor and likely memory.

Not sure which C2D that is, but even a first gen C2D 3GHz should still hold up well enough. Certainly it'll hold any new graphics card back a bit. But a 560 or 570 will still be a significant improvement and provide a big increase in FPS with most games over the 260.

Blizzard games like WOW and Starcraft and probably Diablo 3 are pretty CPU heavy, so the improvement may be less significant with them. But those are a minority.

You should probably resign yourself to that fact, honestly. Any GPU upgrade is going to be bottlenecked SOMEWHAT by your proc. Its just a matter of the game and how CPU intensive it is. As Ravyn said, you should be fine with real games coded for real hardware and not Walmart PCs.

FYI

I'm running a C2Q 6600 and just upgraded from SLI'd 8800GT's to the 560Ti 448. Playing SW:ToR I did not really notice much difference.

Caoilin,

I built in January and have the 560ti 448 core ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130738 ) and I could not be any happier with this purchase.

You can get the "ultra" version for $10 more than what i linked above, which would be worth it.

Good luck!

Core2Duo E8400 that she has is fast enough for most games these days or until she gets money for an Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge.

Plug a GTX5xx next to that and it should kill everything out there.

My brother is using a GTX580 with his and he doesn't run into any issues yet. Mutli-core gaming is just really starting to take off the last year.

Yeah, when I played SWTOR it seemed very GPU light.

I got the FTW version. It came factory overclocked to 797. I havent experimented any higher due to paranoia over losing $250.

I need some card advice too, but Im not limiting myself to NVidia.

Win 32
4 Gigs RAM(system sees 3.5 Gigs in system properties)
E8400 Core2Duo @3.00 Ghz
Geforce 9800 GT

I wont be building a new PC till early next year but if I can get an affordable upgrade to performance for now I would like it.

Am I correct to figure that getting more RAM on the card will do nothing?

I probably meet the minimum reqs for the games I plan to play this year(GW2 PS2 D3) but if I can get a noticeable improvement from a card in the $150-$200 range I would be happy.
Im not going to over clock it myself.

I am not positive but with windows 32bit you may not want to get too much more memory on your video card. Win 32 will only register 4GB total memory in your system. Typically 512MB(.5GB) on a video is registered and then the remaining 3.5GB is there for the system. If you get 1GB on the video card then 3GB is registered for use for the system. The math is pretty straight forward.
Windows 64 bit does not have the 4GB memory cap which allows for video cards to have higher amounts of memory on them and not affect the cap on the system memory as much.

You are correct that if I get a card with 1 Gig of onboard RAM that my system RAM will drop down to 3 Gigs.

1 Im not sure which is better with respect to game performance.

2 There arent many options with .5 Gigs of RAM.

3 I would think though that somehow I should be able to get significantly better performance than I do with this really old card.
