Development teams remain "largely unaffected".

Still, sucks. Hope those people land on their feet.

The bulk of the 1500 people they added after WoW was launched, was in CSR and Administrative type work. Over the last 4 or 5 years, it stands to reason they have been working on improving all those functions so they wouldn't need to have as many CSR's and Admins as they had in the past.

I am sure some of it is also due to lost subscriptions meaning less work, but I bet a lot less is due to that than improvements.

Consider how much of the customer service stuff was manual back in Ye Olde Days of WoW, versus how much is automated today. Most likely some of that, plus getting rid of folks that haven't been significant contributors to current products for a while...

I hope they got rid of GC, but it's too little too late to keep me around. Account dies on Saturday for good.

I, on the other hand, am hiring. Anyone want to make some money doing transcription? Yes, I am serious. I just landed a major transcription client (50+ hours of audio per week for the next 12 months) and could use some decent typists. I figured people who post here a lot are pretty good at typing. lol

The layoffs were bound to happen. Economy downturn can only lead to cost-cutting measures. Hope they find new jobs quick!

I think this does mean that WoW will no longer have leaps of innovation, including in its art models for in game objects etc. I remember how stoked everyone was when new models on armor, weapons, etc. appeared in WOTLK, but most of cata was recycling.

Count on MOP and all future expansions being recycling of existing models/content. I would even guess that about the only new models we will see in MOP will be pandas. Armor/Wep models, and dungeon tiles (scenery) will be completely recycled from current models.

But I think Mithan is right, most of the layoffs are probably CSR jobs etc.

My guess asside from what a lot of other people have said is that they have finished a lot of what they needed these people for. a big one would be localization... they came out with all these localizations for brazil, japan, etc. etc.

well once the game is done there you can drop 100 people and keep 10 around to keep it going type of thing.

another is they could be done with titan. maybe you wanted 400 coders/devs for your new game and now that it could be say 90% done you drop half of them as you just don't need them anymore.

it's the nature of game making that they hire a whole bunch of people then right as the game is done they say... "thanks, have a good life" to the majority of the workers.

Since you can buy objects now and sell for gold (like the mounts)..they don't need the 600 gold farmers anymore..

hahah that or maybe 90% finally had to buy the authinticator and now its harder for them to claim you "got hacked" after you had been unsubbed for a few months.

When I first saw this thread I did not think much of it. There is always dead weight that needs to be trimed from time to time. Now I'm two days into a 5 day 10 hour ticket. It was because a piece of gear I won was never put into my pack. Before this they would answer in minutes. Not sure if this was because of the layoffs but their service sure sucks. My nephew got his account stolen yesterday. He has to wait 2 hours on hold. Really lame service.

Let me save you 5 days of wasted time grin

If the gear you won was in the LFR dungeon, but it did not show up in your pack, it is because the dumbasses at blizzard can't code simply enough to put it in your pack. When you win the role in LFR, you still have to click the boss and loot it.

Retarded huh? happy

They still give you the gear though, unless I've only ever gotten nice CSRs.
