On a side note, I went and looked at foods high in Vitamin D... then looked at foods high in iron and found this gem: "Whale, beluga, meat, dried (Alaska Native)" Awesome! I should start eating beluga meat, but watch my cholesterol... ROFL

There isn't a sufficient natural source of vitamin D through foods, its converted by sunlight into vitamin D from cholesterol. fish oil supplement is as close as you get, I think. Edit: and if you start eating beluga, I hope someone clubs you to death... they're too cute to eat.

Get a blood test before you try to supplement it. Yes, they say that "most" people are deficient and I thought I was, too... but I recently had a blood test that showed that my levels are fine. Check out if there's a problem before you try to fix it.

my reg doctor and my pain doctor have both commented on how they're just now finding that nearly everyone is deficient in vit d these days. and these are doctors that practice in san diego. so i think it's more than just not being in the sun enough.

I've been reading a bit on it, and they say that the increase in super high sunscreen/block and the increase of people using them has a lot to do with it. Back when I was a kid SPF 4-6 was the most people ever really wore, now it's SPF 100.

My wife and I have the tri-fecta going against us: we live in Portland, OR (f***ing cloudy 300 days a year!), we do shift work, and that shift work is from 7:00pm-7:30am, so we are sleeping during the day.
Top it all off, and one of the "side effects" of vitamin D deficiency is depression.

I take a Vitamin D3 supplement from Nature's Bounty. Might also suggest finding a Vitamin A supplement. Also in Portland, OR. Tend to work later hours, not that it would matter as the sun is never out here.
