What I am wondering is if this is a clear prequel to Alien or not.

When I first saw this, I thought it was the original crashed ship that they found in the movie Alien and it was going to have a different spin on things (no aliens running around, but just show the eggs), but now I am not sure.

It will hint to things from Alien, but it's its own movie.

its about the space jockeys that released the aliens. the aliens were designed by the space jockeys as bio warfare to take over planets.

Yes but is it in the same "world" and are the "hints" canaan? You know what I mean?

I don't care if I see "aliens" running around or anything, I just want to know that this is officially in the same world and that maybe, Ridley will reboot the series at some point. That would be awesome. Aliens is one of my favorite action movies ever made.

According to Scott, though the film shares "strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak", Prometheus will explore its own mythology and universe.

Well...ok not spoiling anything here...but I've been reading a lot of stuff about this movie, including an interview with Scott that basically tells you it's in the universe of Alien/Aliens...

If you don't mind spoilers, here's something from teh interwebs I got earlier today:

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD *

Scott explains - “When the first ‘Alien’ movie and ‘Blade Runner’ were made, I thought that in the near future the world will be owned by large companies. This is why we have the Tyrell Corporation in ‘Blade Runner’, and Weyland-Yutani in ‘Alien’. They sent the Nostromo spaceship.”

He goes on to say “The Prometheus is owned by an entrepreneur called Peter Weyland, and is played by Guy Pearce. That’s the connection between the two films, and nothing more. ‘Prometheus’ is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course new monsters as well.”

Pearce has previously said his character only has a very short cameo in the film.

I liked 4.

Agreed on Aliens vs Predator, though the first one did have some OK "lore" to it initially. The second was stupid and the third sort of got a bit better.

Such wasted potential.

i'm hesitant about the movie when he says its going to have its own mythology and explorations. it sounds like its going to end up deviating from a good movie and dealing with a bunch of stupid philosophical themes that have been done to death.

also a pg-13 would pretty much mean instant flop.

ugh. the alien movies are still good. a "reboot" would ruin them. plain

I think most people feel the same, its not about being a purist. The first time you experience something really new, different or exciting its the most fun you've had in a long time. It happens with movies, games, and other things in life.

The first time you experience something exciting will always be the best.... matching that moment is almost impossible. Once you throw "expectations" into the picture, you will be raising the bar way high. Once in a blue moon someone manages to actually outdo the first encounter (with movie or game), but that is pretty rare.

Once it becomes a "franchise", its all about merchandising and tends to go downhill.

It's a Sci-Fi film by Ridley Scott. It's going to kick ass.
