So what happens when it fades or when your body shape changes slightly? Do tats this detailed start to look bad really quick? Do you have to get them touched up a lot?

I got a tat of spider, only about 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches, on my back when I was 19. Now I am almost 60. The tat is not much more than a black smudge now and you can barely even tell what it is even though it is a fairly simple design.

Since so many young people are getting large, and often several, tats now days I can only imagine what they will think of them when they are 30, or 60. What I thought was really "cool" when I was a teenager is not so "cool" anymore. Ideas and interests change. Tats are all but permanent and colors fade and the ink will bleed into surrounding tissue over time causing the image to distort and loose sharpness.

I know when you are young its all about the present with little thought about the future. Been there, done that. I know my telling you this will pretty much mean nothing to you because you already "know it all" and forethought escapes you. Not because you lack intelligence but simply because you are young. We were all that way. As you grow older your thinking will change but there is not much anyone can tell you now that will make any difference. You will have to find it out for your self.

Also keep in mind that regardless of what you see in the movies and on TV or whatever, many jobs and opportunities are closed to people with visible tats. Most nursing schools and medical school will not accept people with visible tats and they can limit you in other ways.

Now, if your life ambition is to work in circus or midway, work construction, drive a truck or anyone of a number of other perfectly honorable professions, than any number of tats will probably not hold you back. But, if you ever expect to reach for much more than a lower/middle class life style then you should consider tats as part of the equation.

Anyway, I'm done. I'm not lecturing. I'm not telling you not to tat yourself from one end to the other. I'm just saying there is another side to every coin and perhaps you should at least try to think about it.

Peace

This from a modern tattoo artist when asked about aging:

"Tattoo pigments today are brighter, WAY more diverse, and will hold up a lot better... probably. (Honestly, many of the tattoo inks that are most popular today are only a decade-and-change old at most, so we'll just have to wait and see!)"

Good luck with the experiment.

I've heard that the military won't take anyone who has wrist tattoos that are past the shirt sleeve, but I've never heard that about medical school. And I don't believe it, either. Tattoos have become much more acceptable these days. I know a bunch of teachers who have visible tattoos and I think that used to be frowned upon but not anymore.

A quick internet search brought up a few interesting bits on tattoos. Again, I'm not telling you not to. Again, I'm just saying you need to take info like this into consideration because it can affect your life in ways you may not have considered.

"I was told the reason they could not hire me, was because of my tattoos. He told me that he personally thought I would make a great addition, but that it is against corporate policy to have tattoos. If I ever got my tattoos removed, I should give him a call because he would "hire me in a minute". I hung up the phone in disbelief. My 1 year old daughter and my wife will now have it more difficult because I have tattoos? Don't give me that crap that "It was your choice...you should have known better". I am a hardworking, proud individual, that has a great work ethic, was more than capable of doing that job. To be turned down because of tattoos on my hand seems completely discriminatory in my opinion. Add to the fact, that the store manager himself has tattoos that he covers up, and I feel like I was just given a giant middle finger by society." Individual looking for a job

"You cannot have visible tattoos while in the short sleeve uniform. That includes the front and back of arms and includes the neck and facial area." Georgia State Highway Patrol

Consistency, respect for diversity are keys to a successful policy
Companies can limit employees' personal expression on the job as long as they do not impinge on their civil liberties. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), employers are allowed to impose dress codes and appearance policies as long as they do not discriminate or hinder a person's race, color, religion, age, national origin, or gender.
81 percent of respondents think piercings in places other than the ears are unprofessional
76 percent of respondents believe visible tattoos are unprofessional
Sources: Careerbuilder and Vault.com

Tattoos and Body Piercings
Many supervisors are concerned that visible tattoos and body piercings such as nose rings and tongue studs may offend some of their customers and co-workers. While tattoos and piercings may be examples of self-expression, they generally are not recognized as indications of religious or racial expression and, therefore, are not protected under federal discrimination laws.
Whether a school/entity/department/unit should specifically address tattoos and body piercings in its standards/guidelines, generally depends on the nature of the business and customer contact. Most employers that have guidelines dealing with tattoos and body piercings limit restrictions to staff who have contact with the public and only require that the tattoos and piercings not be visible. In addition, any limitations imposed should be gender neutral to prevent sex discrimination claims.

We had a guy working here as a software programmer who was covered in tattoos and piercings, with a bright blue mohawk. He was quite talented.

I'm not saying having visible tattoos won't limit the number of places you can work, because it certainly can, but attitudes have changed a lot and making this choice isn't as limiting as it used to be.

Tattoos are a cultural thing. As the culture changes, the impression of tattoos changes.

And I am a firm believer that I would rather be 50 with a tattoo that I don't like than go through my 20s and 30s (the last years where image matters) regretting that I was too afraid of doing something I know I wanted to

Visible tats are absolutely judged in *most* workplaces and in med school applications.

They might not deny you because of it but don't think they aren't looking at it and wondering about the person.

Okay but let's make one thing clear, in any professional setting, neither of those are visible tattoos. Visible tattoos are on the hands neck or face period. (unless you have some quarter sleeve uniforms)

For the record I'd never get a tattoo that was visible. Not that I see anything wrong with it but just raised that way. However those tattoos are on the upper arm and shoulder easily covered up.

I've worked in so many jobs where piercings have not been allowed, and not once had anyone notice my tongue is pierced. Because i dont push my tongue forward when i talk (a lot of people with tongue piercings do this so that it is more visible), and i make an effort for it to not be visible. I think if an employer ever had a problem with it i would just put a clear plastic retainer in it so that it was less visible, but i would avoid taking it out if possible.

Not these days.

Hell, I joined in '98 and they waived through a dude who had a profanity scorpion tattooed on the top of his head.

The stinger went down the back of his neck and the legs went down to the tops of his ears.

It was pretty badass.

There sure are a lot of holier-than-though tos in this thread.

Some of you really seem to feel threatened by folks sporting a little ink.

So much so, you feel the need to extol the virtues of conformity at every positive response to ink.

I don't know of any medical schools that expressly ban it. You do have to interview and it's fair to say that anyone with tattoos showing outside of a suit is going to have a hard time in the professional world. It's also fair to say that anyone with tattoos visible to their peers, patients, and bosses is going to run into some problems as a student, resident, fellow, and junior attending.

The more important thing to know is that any physician with a caduceus (with the possible exeption of people with a military medicine connection) is a douche...

I was wondering if this was sarcasm or serious... I can't imagine being that upset over someone wanting tattoos, or piercings, or a weird haircut/color etc. Unless the tat said something about the wife being a bitch. lol
