Any particular brand, model or feature that is indispensable?

I am looking for cheap I want to keep it under $150.

Thank you...

I think the most important feature is free lifetime map updates.

I have a Tom Tom, only reason I got it was for the free lifetime map updates. All pretty much the same IMO

I have garmin nuvii, works well for mapped roads.

only thing I dont like about it is its lack of a "trace" feature, but I only paid a $150 for it brand new and that was back in 2006 now they are less than a $100.

with the free maps thats not a issue there is enough 3rd party sites out there that support all the popular brands and models.

I got my Garmin nuvi at Sam's for $200.00 with lifetime maps but it was the more expensive one with the bigger screen.

I say get from NewEgg.com

Best Buy overprices their stuff and will rape you good... But if money is no objection, then eh... go for it...

Most smartphones do as well, or better than standalone GPS units these days.

Check on slickdeals.net. If you don't see anything on the front page use gps in the keyword search. A bunch of stuff will show up but make sure it isn't expired.

I have an Omnitech, which is hackable and that's why I bought it, I can put whatever software I want on it.

however, I've been using a free app on my phone called Waze that is user driven, people send in real time reports so you get reports on traffic in your area, as well as info on routes to take.

I got a TomTom xl350 from best buy for $129

It's small (should fit into my clear top pouch on my BMW tank bag), and has lifetime updates for map and traffic, looks like I am downloading some sort of red light camera app now.

It gets put to the test tomorrow in Kauai.

I had a $300 Garmin. Then I got a Droid X phone, with Google Navigation.

The Garmin hasn't left my glovebox since. Not only are the GPS devices in phones just as good as the ones in standalone-GPS-devices, but they also update their maps automotically (unlike Garmins, where they charge you like $100 for a new map or something outrageous). And, it's your phone - you have it in your pocket anyways and if you're worried about batteries then just use your car charger.

I even have a navi holder that adjusts down to the size of my phone, I think it cost $6 from this place called "the mount guys". (yes, I giggle at the name like a 12 year old.) it pinches onto the air vent so it's out of the field of view enough to not be dangerous or distracting.... and if a cop sees me poking around on it, he thinks its a navi, not my phone.

This is the same model I have. Just as a FYI there is a way to change the voice on the unit to George Bush that is effing hilarious. Mispronounces everything, says all kinds of dumb things.
