Why would schools give scholarships for smart people? If people valued smart people they'd find a way to make them into revenue for the college.

Smart people raise the level of education for everyone they interact with in school.

Supply/Demand .. you can toss in a PC society that would frown on potential "contact sports" that would generate some revenue

USC has always cultivated and encouraged Olympic Athletes.

That's just what a fine institution of higher learning does.

Keep going with that thought. You'll get there eventually.

When my daughter competes in the Olympics she'll bring more notoriety for her school which in turn will bring more money to them. grin

I think the better question for the small government types is why do state funded schools offer sports scholarships at all? Wouldn't the fiscally responsible thing be to use that scholarship money to lower tuition costs for students who want to go to school to learn?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_IX

"Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was originally written in order to end discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, the act tremendously helped to energize the women’s rights movement which had somewhat slowed after women’s suffrage in 1920. On the same token, while Title IX is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, the original statute made no explicit mention of sports"

You should ask the institutions themselves. From page 6 of the USC Handbook,

"the goals for USC Athletics are: to graduate every student-athlete who completes
athletic eligibility at USC; to compete successfully in every sport, striving to be in the top l0
nationally, with the ultimate goal of winning national championships;
to provide an environment
conducive to positive growth and development of student-athletes and Athletics Department
staff; to encourage a real, complete and robust college experience, not just an athletic
experience; to provide adequate financial support within the department to ensure continuing
development of each sport program without university subsidization; and to do all the above
while complying fully with all NCAA and Pac-l2 regulations."

laugh Equestrian. Her coach is a past Olympian from what I was told. Although in all honesty I am not sure she'll ever get there. Shes jumping over 4 and a half feet (they measure it in meters now so I am not sure) now and it scares the crap out of me.

Yeah I was kinda tempted to post this too. Although it's not nearly as bad as legacy admissions for that.

Uh... Smart people earn colleges grants and accreditation...aka money.

How are you people so grossly uninformed about basically everything?
