what do you think about it, and the ppl that were "kinda mean about it" ?

By Vidya Rao

When Paula Deen revealed to Al Roker that she had type-2 diabetes in January, response from the public was fast, furious and largely negative.

Now, just over a month later, Deen says that she was taken aback by the reaction.

“I think it was from a few people that were kinda mean about it and hold it against me,” she told TODAY. “But the people that care for me, Al, they came out like you wouldn’t believe, and they were the people that I care about.”

The Food Network star drew criticism for keeping the diagnosis secret for three years, all while promoting her brand of rich, indulgent dishes.

"It took me 20 years to come out and stand up and say, 'Hey, my name's Paula and I'm agoraphobic,'" she said, defending herself to the Associated Press Friday. "I was so ashamed, so embarrassed. So to do it in two-and-a-half years, I thought it was pretty good."

Deen also made her disclosure at the same time she announced her endorsement deal with Nova Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company that supplies her diabetes medication.

Paula Deen: Diabetes diagnosis won't change how I cook

On the night of the announcement, in a tweet heard ‘round the world, outspoken chef Anthony Bourdain posted, “Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later."

Today, Bourdain had more to say. Referring to Deen's on-air remark, he tweeted, "'Some people were kind(a) mean..' Some people were kind of greedy."

“Top Chef” judge Hugh Acheson, “Bizarre Foods” host Andrew Zimmern and Jose Andres were among the many famous food personalities who publicly chastised Deen for the way she handled the announcement. And Deen’s longtime publicist Nancy Assuncao quit over the controversy.

TODAY viewers, chefs and fans react to Paula Deen admission

“It was tough,” Deen’s son Bobby told Roker. “I think that when someone comes out and announces that they have an illness and people pile on, it really says something about maybe who’s doing the talking.”

Deen, 65, added that she has “broad shoulders” to deal with the backlash, and even tried to find a silver lining, calling the fact that she’s lived this long “a blessing.”

“I feel like God has given me a blessing, because my mother and daddy died very young, and I’m so proud that I lived long enough to be a member of the baby boomers and to have to deal with something like this,” she said.

Deen told the Associated Press that she now plans to include some healthier recipes on her show, "Paula's Home Cooking," but due to production schedules, it may be up to two years before viewers see those episodes.

I think it just shows she is human.  Stuff like this has gone on throughout history.  People are not ALWAYS the wholesome good hearted personas that they portray on television.  She plays that role to make a living just as she is doing with her announcement and association with the diabetic company. You have to remember she is in business to make money not to bake cookies and be the ol' southern grandma that you never had although some people probably look up to her like that which is fine.  Just dont be shocked and aghast when something like this happens, since again she is only human.

I don't think anyone was sitting around watching her show and thinking that it was in ANY way healthy, so who cares what she announces? It was kind of a "duh" moment anyway...."I put a pound of butter in everything! I have diabetes!"

It's not so different than shade tree mechanic announcing that he bashes his knuckles on every show, or that the yankee workshop guy probably cuts himself a lot on his machinery and tools. It sorta comes with the territory.

I don't expect Loki to put a warning on his ice cream that it may be cold and cause brain freeze.

People can voice their opinions but they need to be tactful. You don't have to be militant with type 2 diabetes in the way you cook and eat, but at the same time you DO need to be mindful of it and take steps to treat it when you indulge. FWIW it may be that shes out there exercising and eating better than she is cooking but the show she puts on doesnt lend to that possibility. Her cooking does look VERY tasty but its obviously VERY unhealthy. One cant eat like that every meal, especially if you have type 2 diabetes.

Exactly...people act like she is promoting the food that she cooks to be eaten at EVERY meal.  If people who criticize her would actually watch  her show rather than just go on the rabble that they hear from other people they would know that she actually says multiple times that most of her recipes ARENT to be eaten regularly but for when you are treating yourself basically.

uhhh you do if you want to keep living, just adjusting your insulin so you can eat a pan full of cookies is not going to be good for your body. its the people who are consistently inconsistent with their diets that lose their feet and eyesight to it.

If there is a karma, it probably just gave you pancreatic cancer. Maybe you can be an internet jerk to the nurses that change your diapers then too.

Ptilk is not an "internet jerk", it's an eccentric old fart that has gotten crotchety in his old age.

he's that guy in the nursing home that is always frowning and negative about everything, but then pinches the nurses butt from his wheel chair when she walks by.

How do people find the time and effort to give a damn, let alone verbalize/type it out just so she knows?

I'm sure she believes she's cooking health food, right.

I'd say it's irresponsible at best to have a cooking that promotes unhealthy food then cry foul when she gets the beetus.

Idiot.. people already know how to eat like crap.. she should be showing them how to eat healthier.

How did you eat it? That can make a huge difference. Personally i think it's best on toast.

On toast.

One square with cream cheese in the mix, one without.

Yeah people get kinda mean when you profit from bad advice. If you can live with the profit you can probably live with the mean.

It was my understanding that people were 'mean' to her because she only decided to announce she had diabetes since she hooked up with a pharmaceutical company who she will be a spokesperson for.

I like using it to "spice up" a cheese sandwich, too, that's pretty awesome. But then sometimes i just stick my finger in the jar for the hell of it lol

"One of the important diabetes nutrition guidelines is to eat less than 7% of calories from saturated fat. For most people eating, this is about 15 grams of saturated fat per day. That is not much when you consider just one ounce of cheese can have 8 grams of saturated fat."

Perhaps I should clarify. It's one thing when you already have diabetes, because yes you're at a higher risk for heart disease and thus should probably lower your saturated fat intake.

However, I've seen a number of people say something like "well what did she expect, eating all that butter? OF COURSE she got diabetes!!"

There is no evidence on this green earth that eating fatty foods contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes, apart from the fact that if you stuff your face all day and never exercise, you're gonna get fat, and obesity is definitely a risk factor.

Who Gets Type 2 Diabetes?

Anyone can get type 2 diabetes. However, those at highest risk for the disease are those who are obese or overweight, women who have had gestational diabetes, people with family members who have type 2 diabetes and people who have metabolic syndrome (a cluster of problems that include high cholesterol, high triglycerides, low good 'HDL' cholesterol and a high bad 'LDL' cholesterol, and high blood pressure). In addition, older people are more susceptible to developing the disease since aging makes the body less tolerant of sugars.

http://diabetes.webmd.com/guide/type-2-diabetes

If you are asking for definite proof that butter leads to type 2 - it isn't there. But to say there is no evidence is inaccurate. The foods she pushed (butter based) and being obese/overweight and high LDL is a pretty easy connection. Simply put eating fatty foods does lead to greatly increased chances of being overweight or obese - both risk factors for type 2. So there is evidence just not proof.

Hiding her status while cutting a deal was low.

I will be mean to public figures that push the eat whatever you want and pop a pill lifestyle. Again she can live with the profit so she can probably live with the mean.

That's actually the thing most people seem to be peeved about. Not even so much about the having diabetes while promoting unhealthy foods, but the pharmaceutical deal and whatnot. I just don't care enough about Paula Deen to...well...care. Except for the fact that every time I see her face on a magazine it scares me a little bit. She always looks so...plastic and startled, with the psycho smile and the wide open eyes and the pink pink lipstick.

From the study I linked, there was no difference in development of type 2 diabetes between women who ate a high fat diet vs. women who ate a low fat diet. What they did find was that regardless of the type of diet, the women who lost weight were less likely to develop diabetes- all around indicating that weight, and not the foods you eat, was where the risk lies.

That's cool. Glad you are reading the research.

I'll just say one thing - one study doesn't mean much in the field of biology. The eat crap and pop a pill lifestyle is not for me and I will be vocal about it. There is plenty of research that says eat good feel good. I only want people to be healthy and hate seeing disease where it may have been be avoided.

Good night.
