From what I can tell it's a "career" that rich girls from L.A. have when they can live on Daddy's money, take a seminar, and then run around telling everyone else how to live their lives according to a bunch of simplistic platitudes about loving yourself and being "centered."
Like 4 of the ladies I knew at USC call themselves "Life Coaches." I've yet to ask one, "tell me, sitting in Daddy's multimillion dollar L.A. Condo, driving around in the little BMW coupe he bought, and never having had a real job in your life, how are you going to coach other people about their lives?"
All of them are "Life coaches and social media mentors". 
I would think the extent of their advice would be "don't forget to cash Daddy's checks" and "Don't put anything on Facebook that you wouldn't want your Sorority Sisters to see."

Some people can benefit from one - it's no different than a personal trainer.
Do you need someone telling you to keep doing squats or whatever? But a lot of people still hire a trainer to tell them to do very obvious things.
edit: You can go to friends with your problems but there is a limit to that - if you vent all your problems to your friends, eventually your friends will lose respect for you and stop being your friends. You can't use a friend as someone to vent to, they'll go nuts. That's why a therapist is valuable, their job is to sit there and listen to you vent.

I've referred to myself as a life coach to clients before. It's more all-encompassing than personal trainer, and since I give dietary advice as well, that's good. The idea is that it's someone who will help empower you to take control of your life and well being. There isn't just one definition.
Many fat outposters could use a good life coach

Have you seen that show on Adult Swim that comes on late Thursday nights (like midnight EST) right before Children's Hospital or maybe it's that other show NCIS:SUV or something, where the guy is in the witness protection program and has to walk around all the time with a ski mask on? I forget the name of it. Anyway, he has a life coach and it seems to work out for him pretty well.

You guys are so critical. Everyone needs certain outlets and sometimes they aren't available to you through everyday life. I have all that stuff covered and am grateful for it, but that doesn't mean I'm blind to the fact that not everyone is as lucky or as blessed as me.
If going to a lifecoach is going to prevent you from offing yourself after your dog is evicted, then more power to you.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it but I was too flippant. Whatever works for someone is good. I use to hammer the flippers (people who read the bible by flipping from phrase to phrase) but had to stop when I realized I was tearing down what works for them without replacing it with something better. If flipping through the bible keeps their life going then flip away. If a life coach helps you then by all means; use a life coach.

You should always interview your potential life coach to see if
They own a home
Are physically fit
Have a healthy relationship with a significant other
If they dont personally have those things themselves they have no credibility telling others how to live their lives

If someone goes to a life coach and gets some form of help its not a total crock...
I used to feel like my life was in a quagmire and I couldnt get going... military sent me to talk to a head shrinker, gotta admit it helped me find the path that was right in front of me, and really all he did was let me talk.
Used to think they were a total crock as well, people need help in different ways... just because its not for you doesnt mean it isnt for someone else.

they are often a scam but the scam is usually on the actual "coach". we used to have a couple of the life coach organisations as clients when i worked at a conferencing company. they woo people in with promises of making a difference in people's lives and also how much money they could earn.
people pay $1000s for materials and "training" and then a license thing to practice in a certain area.
its basically a pyriamid scheme imo
however i think there are some benefits in having a mentor especially when you are just starting out. about 4 times a year I meet up with this lady who has been in my field for 25+ years for a chat about how things are going and to get advice/bounce ideas. Its all hooked up through an industry association. For the most part i think its all about networking but the advice is often really handy. Particularly when you work in such a politically charged organisation like mine.

I read the 33 Strategies of War, The 48 Laws of Power, (and the Art of Seduction) by Robert Greene. I really liked the side-by-side comparison of what he was saying with real historical examples. The examples are really what intrigued me, but he wasn't saying nonsense either.
I saw a Tony Robins speech on TED.com and was interested so I downloaded his short audiobook. I liked the TED talk better, but the audiobook, when compared to Robert Greenes' works was surprisingly similar. I connected better with Greene, only because I like viewing life and interactions as battle and he presented the ideas along those lines. But mainly both authors speak common sense and encourage you to lay out a plan and then achieve smaller goals that lead up to your large ones. They both speak of Death Ground, I think Robin's even mentioned Burning the Ships, alluding to Cortez's strategy for motivating his men. His ideas sounded like a lot of pseudo science, but they rang true all the same. Form good habits and you can expect good results (but there was a lot of brainwave talk which didn't do much for me).
My life wasn't changed reading these things, but I've always had a pretty solid head on my shoulders. It was nice reading about how other people became successful though, and it's good to keep in mind that no one ever really starts out as a success.
