Trying to get a road bike I can trailer the kid behind. My mountain bike sucks on the street so looking for something that does a little better on the road. Dont want anything too terribly fancy, but I dont want anything crappy either.

More likely with my current Mtn Bike than a road bike.

What kind of roads are you gonna be ridding on? (all paved?)
Any hills?
Price range.
Do you know anything about putting a bike together yourself and adjusting things properly? (if not that eliminates buying one online.)

For dealer bikes im a fan of specialized bikes but it depends on your price range.

You might look at the specialized Sirrus. Starts at $500

Would be all paved or at least 90% paved. I have a full suspension Gary Fisher mtn bike for off roading.

There may be some hills, I wouldnt be climbing any mountains though.

Price range is TBD, I dont want anything thats going to cost me thousands as I wont be using it to win any races, this will just be for touring around with the kid on the pavement around here.

I have looked at a couple specialized road bikes Allez, Sirrus, and Roll (I think this is their lower end touring bike). When I was a kid Specialized was the brand I grew up with but I am keeping my options open as Specialized tends to make higher end bikes.

I could put it together myself if I wanted to just buy a frame and components seperately but I dont know I want to spend that much, like I said not going to be doing any racing or anything.

look at craigslist.

I see road bikes on there all the time in my area for WAY under their selling price...I saw a $500 trek full suspension mountain bike for like $175 last week...thought about buying it because my bike sucks...but I don't ride much and definitely not enough to warrant a full suspension bike.

If you can put it together yourself then id look at bikes from
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com
http://www.performancebike.com

But if you dont know how to adjust the cabling or dont have a truing stand then id go with a shop bike.

Have you considered a hybrid? I found them a lot cheaper for getting the same components as some of the road bikes. But you get a more comfortable bike and a lot more durable than a road bike. (I put 5,00km on my Raleigh hybrid every year for 6 years straight.)

This, unless you plan on riding something like 50 miles a day.

Hybrid is also a great option if your gonna ride with the family. Its alot more forgiving having a bigger tire. I can feel every little bump when im out riding my skinny tire bike and at the end of the day my ass really hurts. I don't wear padded bicycle shorts.
Having the handlebars a bit upright on the hybrid is also very nice on your back.

Trek.

Aluminum frames are far superior to steel and if you can afford titanium, do it. Get the best components that you can, thank me later.

Seriously, buy a better bike than you think you'll need. That way it will be a joy to ride and you'll find yourself biking a lot more than you thought you would.

I prefer steel. Its quiet and more forgiving.
I think my new frame is gonna be this

Steel is heavier by far. Aluminum is more rigid, but more than makes up for it by the weight reduction. Slightly lower tire pressures will offset the "forgiving" nature of the steel ride you are referring to.

1 lb in frame weight isnt a big deal.

Heres my current toy sitting in my old apartment. So happy to be out of that hole.

I have a NORCO VFR that is pretty awesome. I use it on the road 90% and a dirt drive way. I like the bike and it's in the $500 range. Made in Canada is the only drawback.

Sedona. My ass thanks me after an hours ride. Lots of comfort and a all around good bike. Mine is an older model though that has disc brakes.. It was about $420ish, iirc.

Good bike, Specialised Expedition would work well too. Do not get a road racing bike for just tooling around with the family.

I got a Trek hybrid to tool around with the baby's tagalong before she was riding. I'm using the same bike now that she's using one of these and it's been a very comfortable ride. http://www.amazon.com/WeeRide-96455-Co-Pilot-Bike-Trailer/dp/B000I4255G

just get slicks for your GF.

that's what i do with mine.
instead of dumping $1100 into a road bike i spend $200 on rims and slicks.
and i assume you can lock out the rear suspension?

The second set of tires I got for my hybrid had the solid center line so when they were inflated well they were like slicks. (3rd set was the same. happy )
