Type 2 is diet related and is reversible Type 1 is genetic or has more genetic factors associated with it methinks..

Type I is most often genetic although it appears some external triggers can cause it. In Type I the pancreas stops producing insulin altogether or produces very little. The result is extremely high blood glucose that can only be controlled with medication, often insulin injection. It has serious consequences including hyperglycemia that can lead to ketoacidosis as well as organ and nerve damage. Badly managed insulin therapy can also lead to blood sugar valleys and coma. Diabetics with Type I basically can't eat anything with sugar.

Type II is acquired almost always through diet and lifestyle. Long term spikes in blood glucose from inactivity, weight gain, and unhealthy eating lead to the body developing resistance to its own insulin. So unlike Type I, the body produces insulin but it is inhibited in using it. It has many of the long term risks of Type I, but can be controlled or even reversed with lifestyle changes like weight management, exercise, and stress management. Type II diabetics might take medication to assist their body in processing insulin but rarely have to take insulin itself. They can also eat realtively normally as long as they are careful.

Type 1 is when your pancrease produces zero insulin, because your own body has killed all the islets of Langerhans cells that produce insulin... this occurs for no apparent reason after a viral infection and your body goes nutso. Okay, so now this type 1 diabetic is dependent on insulin for the rest of their life! This type of diabetes does have some genetic components, it is random and unfortunate as you cannot prevent it from happening if its going to happen.

Type 2 is what the used to call adult onset diabetes.. but now fat kids are getting it too. This has a genetic components as well but but it is primarily affected by diet and exercise (or lack thereof). When you keep eating snacks, sugar, etc your pancreases is constantly releasing insulin. Eventually your cells become resistant to insulin and it takes more insulin to get into the cells... this drives up your blood sugar crazy amounts. Your islets of Langerhans can also start producing less insulin. Type 2 is the only type that can take oral medication to help, some of these meds help the cells become more susceptible to insulin, some help produce more insulin, some slow digestion, etc.

"Diabetics with Type I basically can't eat anything with sugar."

Wrong, Type 1s can eat anything you just have to cover the carbs with insulin... usually 1 unit of insulin per 10g of carbs.
