That shouldnt be legal. They need to change the laws so you cant put a HUGE insurance policy on someone and then either hope they die soon or you murder them.

At the very least you should get a letter from the insurance company saying that so and so put a million dollar life insurance policy on you. At least that way you can be wary and arm yourself lol

she was a minor, when the policy started... but now that shes an adult, control of the policy (in full or partially) should change to my wife.

1. the named insured is required to sign the application for any insurance purchased for them.
2. the parent/guardian of a minor named insured can apply for a policy, but suitability dictates that the parent have at least the same amount of coverage on themselves as they do on their children.
3. policy ownership does not automatically transfer to a minor once the turn 18, but typically those policies are assigned at some point (graduation/marriage/home purchase).
4. parents only have to show insurable interest at the time of purchase, and never have to assign the policy to a minor or change the beneficiary.
Walmart has been challenged on their process of taking out life insurance on employees, but key person insurance is used across all industries to protect a business from losing someone vital to operations.
@Fat I would definitely talk to them. If you are willing to assume any premium payments on the policy, I don't see why the wouldn't assign the policy to your wife. Have they co-signed on any loans for you guys, or would they be responsible for children if something happened to her? If not, then they don't really need a policy on her any more.

wifes cousin is gonna take the kids if we croak. theres mortgage insurance if one or both of us croak. and we do not owe them a penny.
the wife is 28 now. she has brought it up to her mother. but her mom is a nutjob and thinks its an insult to transfer the policy away from her

As a policy owner, your mother-in-law might have left the dividends to accumulate in the contract. Perhaps you could propose her withdrawing her dividends prior to assigning it over? If she still isn't interested, well then you really can't consider this policy as part of your life insurance program.
If you guys apply for new life insurance, you will be asked about all existing coverage. You could bring up the policy on your wife, but say you don't know anything about it. A good agent will ask if you can get a copy of the policy (which he should have for your needs analysis). This could at least get a copy of the policy in your hands.
