We used to have a Sams membership and maybe used it once or twice a year. We do have a Costco nearish us and we do get some kind of a deal through work on membership.

I doubt I use mine enough to pay for the yearly fee in any savings I might get, but I like going in and poking around, and their bakery stuff is pretty damn good. So why not?

I lean towards BJ's Wholesale club, but dont go as often as i like due to distance.
Costco is much closer and is almost as good, but both are far superior to SAMs Club - particularly if you buy meat in bulk.

I think it is. However wife and I do not buy everything there. We only go after looking through their latest coupon book (they only accept their own coupons). We mainly get a lot of our personal care stuff there as it's way cheaper when they have a coupon for it. Of course we do that with all our other necessity shopping as well (only buy items on sale or with coupons that make it worth to purchase).

Edit: I have the gold membership but will probably renew only for the regular one when due as we never use any of the Gold membership perks.

Absolutely worth it.

Cheap and easy place to stock up on food, and other supplies...then not have to shop for stuff(aside from fresh fruits/vegetables) for a while.

You have to make a point of going a few times a year or make a large purchase. Like tires or electronics. It's worth it here just for the meats, but you probably have better choices in your normal grocery store than we do here.

I had a Costco membership, now I have a BJ's (when I moved, BJ's was closer than the nearest Costco). It's worth it if you shop like you would at other stores - you definitely can save money if you buy the right things. Some items are regularly priced at what would be sale prices at other stores, other items aren't really much of a savings. You also have a more limited brand selection, so you would probably want a trial membership to see if they carry what you buy. I bought a 7cu ft chest freezer on black friday so I have enough room to store the meat I buy there - a good chunk of my savings comes from stocking up on beef/pork/chicken.

I should also note that with two adults and 3 kids, we definitely make the cost of the membership worth it. Only thing is you just need to pay a little attention to things you buy frequently- sometimes it's actually more expensive per unit to buy at Sam's/Costco than it is to buy at your regular grocery.

Definitely worth it for me. They don't carry crap, so when I buy something, I know I can count on it. They have limited brand selection, but their brand choices are reasonable.

The last three years I have spent $12k, $14k, and $10k there, making the executive membership worth it.

On the other hand, if you feel guilty about impulse purchases, Costco is a poor choice. They have too much cool stuff to avoid them.

worth it, their premium dog food is rated A, which is unheard of for a store brand, and it's also affordable. They have a great tire center... my daughter just had a flat a few days ago, they fixed it when Midas wouldn't touch it because of the location. If they couldn't fix it the warranty would have given her a new tire for free (they were brand new, the warranty is a tread percentage type of thing.)

They sell everything now, even cars, carpet, and gutters!

I just bought a Kitchenaid mixer a week ago at Walmart, and the other day I found a better model for the same price at Costco, so I returned the other one and I'm getting one of the better ones this weekend. I don't have my own card, but my parents only live 6 miles away so I go with them whenever I need something.

We have had a Costco membership for the past 6 years. We buy our staples (milk, eggs, butter, meat, toilet paper) from there as it is MUCH cheaper than regular grocery stores.

Milk, for example, is $2.71/gal. At the grocery store, it's $3.60/gal. Eggs are $2.75/1.5 doz for the top of the line 'brand' that you'd pay $3.50 for a dozen at the grocery store.

Midas wouldn't fix it because they wanted to sell her a new tire.

Costco actually took the tire off the rim and checked to see which direction the puncture went into the tire to determine if they could fix it.

I think it's worth it.

I buy strip loins and pork loins there. The savings on that much meat vs. regular grocery store = the cost of a membership. And the meat there is 100x better than anything my local stores have.

Yep...

I have a business membership under my mother's account. Yay for parents? tongue lol

Last time I went to a Costco was in Maryland (closest one to where I am in New York was 6 hours away in Toronto or NYC). Walked in intending to buy few things... Walked out having dropped over $500 buying non-perishable bulk stuff. I was like ":| well, that ain't good, ha ha..." And man, what a bitch it was trying to get it all to fit in my car even when I had all my stuff after having student-taught in Maryland.

How do we go about a trial membership? They also do RV loans ***hint hint***

I checked their website and their prices for Formula and Diapers are not better than what we are paying now.

Yep... only $55 for a gold card...

Business is also $55

Executive is $110

*shrug* I think they lowered the price, actually... Cuz if memory serves me right, it used to be $110 for Gold and Business, and $175?? for Executive...

For some things, yes. Things you use a lot of and can store without it expiring. Toilet paper, paper towels, washer detergent, paper plates, snack items. We have a family of 6, but hardly go there. I find better deals clipping coupons and going to our local grocery store.

I'm an executive member and it is totally worth it. Cheap gas, cheap contacts, cheapish but very high quality food.

I just hate how much money I spend every time I go. I spend maybe 1/4th as much in a trip to Fred Meyer.

i probably wouldnt buy another membership because i live by myself... buying crap there is meant for restaurants and fatty families. who the hell drinks 2-4 gallons of milk before it goes bad? i have problems finishing a half gallon myself.

i once bought toilet paper there and it lasted me for 1.5 yrs and then some.

Sams is totally worth it to me. I have gold or business or whatever they call it and always get in there early before the crowds when it is nice and quiet. I use it for most of the bulk stuff and for their evalues or whatever they call them. Specially bulk meats since I vacuum pack them in individual servings then freeze them. For produce they aren't worth it though as the Farmers Market is much cheaper.

We go through 2-3 gallons of milk a week, but we also only drink skim. And no, we're not a "fatty" family. I know you have a tendency to be dumb, Tey, but not this dumb.

didnt read all the replies....

DO IT!!!!

since I am the only trained CostCo tech my company has, I do all the Costco's that we win... I love doing new costcos soooo much better than walmart/sams.

I have a membership, only because a warehouse I opened up in the Milwaukee area bought me an executive membership. They gave it to me because I didnt have a membership, as the closest costco from where I lived was almost 1.5 hours away...lol

Really depends on how much you cook and how much meat you eat. Costco has great meat and you can't really get it cheaper anywhere else.

We go every week, even if it is just to buy milk (4 gallons per week...damn I hate having 2 daughters).

Something else about buying items from Costco - they honor the manufacturer warranty and tack on another year or two, just for being a Costco member. And they are nothing like Best Buy - you can pretty much open anything and take it back it you don't like it or it's broken or whatever. Their customer service is awesome.

Hard to say. I notice they have some things cheaper, like Cottage Cheese being about $1 cheaper than everywhere else, plus they have the bulk crap. I figure you probably have to spend over $1000 or so to make up for it.

All you have to do is go up to the door and tell them you're thinking of getting a membership, and they'll let you stroll through and see what's what. Then you can figure out if it's worth it for you.

sams, at least near me, is very ghetto. its messy, the staff isn't helpful and act like they're unimpressed to be working, and the meat and produce sections are unimpressive. if i go into costco the staff is much more efficient, doesn't act like you should be glad they decided to come to work today, they get you through checkout quick, etc. the meat is really good quality and the general selection of all the stuff there is better and the store itself is cleaner than sams.

so it might be a matter of location or who owns which regional stores and how they operate them...but near me sams is crap and costco is good. personally i think it has more to do with walmart owning sams than anything else because thats the same "i hate my job" mentality i get from the people working in sams. treat your staff like crap and they treat your customers like crap and walmart/sams seems to excel at that.

My costco membership is definitely worth it.

It may not be worthwhile to pay for memberships at more than one warehouse store, though.

Having a child in diapers alone makes it worth it to us. We load up on wipes, diapers, etc. Then there is the bulk apple juice and other juice boxes. We bought forumla there as well when we were in the bottle stage. Great selection of one piece jammies as well.

Yes, it is worth it.

We dont have a Sams in Oregon and there is only one Walmart close, not that i would go into that place anyways. Costco is great.

Ditto, Nutro Lamb Large Breed, its also all we will use as its what is recommended by our vet and kennel club.

Kirkland uses too much beat pulp in their dog foods, it slows down metabolisms which isnt good for large dogs who tend to get over weight easily.

And nice kids, too (at the time, at least). We were both AA-sized schools whose bands usually entered in the AAA category, so we'd end up mingling during the stand-around time watching the bands from the humonguous schools.
