I hurt my back last weekend moving my futon mattress. It was one of those bent over at the waist and lifting something too far away from my body. It feels like a pulled/spasming muscle in my back, but it keeps getting worse even though I'm doing alternating heat/ice and taking muscle relaxers and pain killers.

just a few minutes ago I tried to sit up in my chair and I nearly passed out from the pain.

should I give it a few more days, or should I go to the doctor today?

It still just feels like a muscle, I don't have any pinched nerve type of pain going on, and it doesn't feel out of alignment at all.

If you go to a Dr they will tell you to take 800MG of advil or maybe give you some flexoril.

considering your already self medicating it and its getting worse your past time to get it checked. you could have a torn muscle or a herniated disk.

Take some advil or aleve to ease the pain and slowly try to resume normal activity. Do some some leg stretches, etc. Don't just lay in bed, that's the slowest way to recover. Get up, walk around for as much as you can handle without pain.

There are so many things that could be wrong. And, what you're already doing would be adequate for a mild spasm but not a major spasm. You should be checked out I think. I have been there. They had to actually put me on a stretcher and take me to ER. They did X Rays and decided it was a muscle spasm. Gave me a shot of Dimerol and a half hour later I was able to walk very slowly with assistance to the car and go home.

The problem is not all the pain goes to your brain. Some is routed to other parts of your back, the sympathetic system I think, and your back tried to adjust for it and makes it worse. Only strong paid meds will overcome this and allow it to heal up. But once again, I am not a doctor and can only speak for my own experiences.

I have been active everyday since I hurt it, standing feels ok for the most part, bending and getting to sitting and then standing again is the difficult part.

it's definitely not a disk, the pain is to the right side of the spine in the middle back, not directly in the spinal column.

I'm using an ice pack, actually it's a ziploc of liquid laundry detergent that has been frozen.... its a cheap person version of those ice packs that don't get hard when you freeze them, it just gets slushy. I've also been using he massage function on my chair, but that's really just a vibration, not a real massage. I have one of those shiatsu massage cushions but it's kinda brutal, so I was afraid of using it on an injury.

I've also been using a heating pad, and using a lumbar support cushion.

Oh, and I'm taking Tramadol, which is stronger than Advil/Motrin, it's like a weaker version of Hydrocodone.

Not a bad idea if you find a good one. I've had to search thru quite a few to find some that can help me. And, it's probably a spasm. And they do get worse after a couple of days and after a time of inactivity, especially if you are laying down. A recliner might help to sleep in. And a good chiro will X Ray your back too.

Try some leg stretches from flat on your back? That, leg-lifts if you can stand it, cat stretches, things like that. Just don't put yourself in pain though. Anything you can do to get the muscles in that area moving a bit more without pain is going to help you get back to normal quicker.

there are two reasons my first suggestion wasn't a chiro. the first is you have to sort through the witchdoctor new age loonies if you don't already have a decent one. some chiropractors have gone way off the deep end of new age healing. the second is a chiro can't prescribe meds and it sounds like this one is bad enough its going to take a course of pain killers/muscle relaxers to help with. back injuries can be a never ending cycle of the pain keeping the injury from healing so this is one of those times pain meds aren't just for comfort.

the location is just too high for leg lifts get to it, I've been trying to stretch it with twisting my upper half with a stationary lower half while sitting, but I can't move it too far without pain.

No ice after the first couple of days. Moist heat. Hot showers and/or baths are good.

Pain meds as needed, take it easy, don't rush recovery, takes a bit of time.

I find that raising my arms over my head and stretching them (not my back) does more good than anything. Doesn't feel good to my back, but doesn't exactly hurt either, and after doing so for 20 minutes or so....my back pain lessons a bit.

Yeah, go to your doc. And have a driver and ask for a shot of something that will really kick hard for an hour. If it's a spasm it will give it time to release its hold on your back. Then don't try to stretch it any. You'll likely have a relapse.

i can't imagine an actual sitting position that isn't utilizing back muscles.

if you've had chronic back pain before then it's all out the window. chronic pain is a different animal- it's a neurological problem.

what could you possibly teach me?

ways to limit my epistemology by spending my days posting what youtube videos I watched, and what chain emails I read that day?

someone should come onto a thread talking nonsense about subject matter that they know nothing of -- especially with the assumption that they do not know what real pain is.

Safest route is to go to a physician you trust, have them rule out anything serious, and see if they have anything to offer you besides the medications you're already taking.

You can try a chiropractor, magnetic bracelets, herbal teas, or aroma therapy if it'll make you feel better but there's not much in the way of evidence for any sort of actual medical or physiological benefit...

Sounds to me like you're already doing all the right things you can on your own. And ignore the idiots trying to tell you to walk if off and such. My guess is that they really have no idea what real back pain is.

Actually I do, and contrary to old antiquated medical advice about laying around and resting it off, the quickest way to heal back pain is to ease back into your normal activities.

Here, something Dr. Keller wrote about it.

I guess that myself, personally, I would have laughed at the comment, since the back pain clearly isn't that, plus the "bread in it" comment. One of my ways of dealing with suck situations that happen to me is to humorously apply it to situations where it obviously doesn't apply.

I've never gone out of my way to be a douche canoe to anyone on these boards, and honestly thought to elicit a snicker from Jezza.

Bold type = nerve pain = pressure on nerve = bone pressing on nerve = chiropractor

no i would tell her that pain is a product of neural function, and what i know about neurons is that they can fire and 'misbehave' for more reasons than a bone pressing upon them. anyone who claims otherwise with unimaginable oversimplifications like nerve pain = pressure on nerve is not educated.

this is your back (mainframe) and not to be taken lightly.

especially if you have been trying traditional self help rehab methods and it isn't geting better.

all the more reason to have it peeped by a pro.

best of luck with it! rose

Neural circuits in the CNS are susceptible to windup and central sensitization, which are two sources of chronic neuropathic pain associated with nerve injury.

A treatment I would suggest would involve opioids and some sort of massage therapy.

I know it's not nerve pain, its muscular, and there isn't much they can do for me other than getting the muscle to release and giving me more drugs.

Bold type = nerve pain = pressure on nerve = bone pressing on nerve = chiropractor

yeah, spinal manipulation via hard jerks is the way to go

Chiropractors come in two varieties.

Good ones that know they can fix you in a few visits, and if not they tell you that you need more than just adjustments.

and snake oil salesmen that will keep you coming back for months and years, making you feel just a little better, so that you have hope that you might get better one day

FDA approval doesn't necessarily mean it's effective like you are trying to imply.

"There is a great deal of variation in the types of lasers that are used and how they are used. Some devices do not have the output that they promise, and others are little more than light-emitting diodes (LED lights). Some advertise that they can help with herpes, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, wrinkles, cerebral palsy, and other conditions, claims for which there is little or no evidence. The FDA forbids statements that a treatment can help or cure diseases if scientific studies have not found it to be true. It has warned at least one seller of low level lasers to stop making such claims."

the truly sad part is if there were a benefit to a certain type of laser, it would be obscured by low-life charlatans peddling flashlights. disgusting.
