But above all else, what sticks out to me is that Guild Wars 2 is so clearly in love with the idea of being a massively multiplayer game. For a while now, MMOs have been convincing me that all I want is a mostly single-player experience with chat room functionality. Guild Wars 2 reminds me of the joy that can come from having this huge world to explore full of other people to team up with, and it does so without sacrificing any of the approachability or care for storytelling that other games have focused on. This is the revolution that we deserve.

With all the MMOs that have looked awesome and then crash/burned, are you really going to make this prediction?

I'm excited too, but I've seen how seemingly great games end up a few too many times.

GW2 is going to be a small niche game

The media beta was last week.

You can look at a lot of videos and see how awesome it is !

And the frontier zone that are similar to daoc are the size of like 5 planets from SWTOR.

if GW2 is small then SWTOR is miniscule

Yup, I don't play for PvP so it looks like GW2 will not be something that is for me.

No it's not.

Casual? perhaps, but most PVP isn't conducive to casual play. This is largely what makes GW different.

GW2 is gonna be huge. The lack of a subscription fee alone will insure it. It is the ultimate casual game in a lot of ways because you don't have to justify the 15 bucks a month because there is no 15 bucks a month.

I actually wonder how they plan to make the economics of it work. GW wasn't really a MMO. GW2 really is an MMO. Maybe they are planning on making all their upkeep money from regular expansions? Or are they gonna have an in-game store that sells advantages like a f2p model?

This is how they did it in the first one.

The game shop had costumes, seasonal hats, extra character slots, item storage space, etc. Plus the 4 expansions.

I won't mind paying extra for cash shop stuff on a game like this. As long as there isn't anything like if you don't pay $10 for these boots you're going to suck. From all the interviews and things I've seen about the game the devs actually get it. They're making a game for the gamers and something that they themselves as gamers want to see. They didn't make something using X and Y formulas to milk the most money. If it's a niche game I'm fine with that. Daoc was a niche game and was the best 6-7 years I've ever spent with a mmo

A co-worker of mine was mentioning that he enjoyed SWTOR as an online rpg that had other people around, although they sometimes interrupted his single player experience, but he didn't mind too much.

Until they come up with an Online Douchebag Vaccine, I don't want to play a MMO where I have to group up just to progress.

I'm married, I have a kid, I play odd hours, and I don't want to HAVE to sit for a three hour period to play with a group, where I can't stop what I'm doing to walk with my kid or take a break and chat with my wife.

I want to be able to log onto GW2, play for an hour, and log off. I'm not sure this game will allow me to do that.

Yes it will. You can use AI chars to play with you if you don't want to group up.

Every class can be picked. so if you have a dungeon or something that needs 5 you choose 4 NPCS to do it with you ( you pick the class)

it was like that in GW1 as well..

people need to research a bit more.. GW was awesome, GW 2 will be too

That could facilitate their business plan. DDO offers one hour rentals on npcs by class.

Sure it will. Why wouldn't it? The whole point of the design seems to be aimed at making getting into and out of group situations pretty much seamless. You might be soloing and then just randomly run into a group encounter with some other players, do that for a while, then go back to soloing. The idea is not that you'll be sitting around in town shouting "LF tank for ice wurm dynamic encounter."

edit: P.S. Tinkles is wrong. IIRC the GW2 hero system like GW1 had was scrapped a while ago. It might make an appearance someday but not at release.

Are you sure?

I could be wrong but I read somewhere at one point that it was gonna be in the game. Could be wrong though...

Actually now that I think about it they did say you can kill other people's shit and the XP doesn't get split.

So soloing is very possible and like Yuki said you can kill shit, then group up randomly ( it groups you up automatically with people around you during events) then go back to soloing

ALSO this game IS NOT like the others, you dont need to group to do everything. You can solo mobs 5-6-7 level higher than you if you have the skills for it ( dodging attacks, timing yours, ect ect)

What are you talking about?

Will there be henchmen or heroes?

No, there will be no henchmen or heroes. The companion system mentioned in early interviews about Guild Wars 2 was scrapped.

But dungeons and the competitive 5v5 pvp arena are the only parts where you actually need to form a group. Rest of the game is very fluid in not actually requiring grouping even if it is stuff you do with other players. grin

They talked about it but scrapped the companion idea. Since there aren't any straight tank/dps/heals classes all of them can solo. That was one of swtor's biggest strengths and flaws. Sure companions were great for soloing but they really discouraged grouping with others.

GW2 is making me sad, when I played DAoC I did it on US servers and I desperately want to play GW2 with the same group, but im no longer 18 and capable of gaming till 5am and all the euro's I know who play MMO's are full on [mod]ing carebear pve whores, good people just about as much use as a solar powered flashlight in pvp.

/sigh
