posted: File-sharing site The Pirate Bay has said that it will adapt rather than die as it faces legal blocks in the UK.
On Monday the High Court ruled that the site facilitates copyright infringement.
It will decide in June whether ISPs must block UK customers from accessing the site.
In response, The Pirate Bay said it would use other methods for distributing content which would make it harder for its "enemies" to track.
The content industries, both film and music, have been taking a noticeably tougher line on pirates in recent months as they continue to lose profits because of those determined to get content free.
In November, the creative industries wrote to the UK's major ISPs asking them to block access to The Pirate Bay, following the successful closure of movie distribution site Newzbin 2.

posted: New distribution technologies will have little effect if the court decides that ISPs must block access to the site, although that in turn will not mean an end to piracy.
"The Pirate Bay may have outlived its piracy lifespan but is a small task to mirror the site or to copy the indices. Even if The Pirate Bay is closed down people will just have to type 'torrent' into Google to find page after page of links," said Mr Mulligan.
He believes that the content industries are likely to turn their attention to search engines in their ongoing battle to cut down on pirated content online. UK rights holders have already called for illegal content to be "forcibly demoted" in web searches.
"If the content industries get Google on board the problem disappears from the mainstream overnight," he said.
Pretty much, shut down search engine returns and many casual torrenters will be lost.

It's great, TPB has been a lightning rod for all faschist corporate lobbying since years, but thankfully the reality is there are 500 more anonymous trackers working great that don't get all this heat. Plus USENET, plus all emerging file sharing technologies. The end result trying to shut all these sites down / block their traffic is pretty dumb anyway.

independent artists who distribute their own stuff should be more worried about sony than torrents. if millionaires lose a couple grand a year from torrents, then consider it like paying taxes which im sure they cheat the hell out of paying

I dont torrent much. We dont get out much to watch movies because having 3 kids is rough when considering going to a movie. They dont appreciate silence like adults do. So we refrain from going. But if I see a movie I want to see, I have no issues at all torrenting. Its like taking a DVD from someone and making a copy for your house. I have no issues at all with it.

actually its more like borrowing someones official, bought and paid for copy of the movie and sitting down to watch it at your leisure. because, seriously, who keeps copies of movies they download? once youve seen it, why keep the copy on file? if you want to watch it again, just borrow it again

The comic makes a good point. Media companies shouldn't try to go against the flow of the internet by trying to force it to accept an outdated distribution model. But I don't think it's a good argument in support support of theft.

Not really. He purchased the product, and is entitled to show it in the privacy of his own home with company if he wishes. He can also loan his property to someone else. But if he made a copy of it and gave it to you he'd be in violation of copy right law, and you would be a thief.

It's not theft. It's copyright infringement. Two totally different things. While such infringement might result in a loss of revenue by the copyright holder, it often does not, as the person infringing would not have spent money to buy whatever it is in the first place. I torrent crap all the time, not to avoid paying for it, but because I was in no way interested enough in whatever it is to actually pay for it. The only reason I took the slight effort to download it was because I was bored and it didn't cost anything. It's more like free advertising for whoever it is that created the stuff than it is theft. If I end up being surprised and liking it, I might actually purchase crap from the creator in the future. If I really want something (Book, movie, magazine, whatever) I want to own a copy and want to pay for it. I like supporting people who create stuff I like. If it's a TV show they can suck it. They broadcast it, I already pay for cable, so I already paid for the damn thing. Can't steal something you paid for.
