Why do people think gas prices are so high this time? Crude Oil prices are going up but is that really why they are so high? Is it a result of increased demand? More economic activity tends to push up demand. Is it a result of artificial or precautionary limits on the supply of gas?
Just curious what people think is going on.

We're exporting gasoline because our refineries do it cheaper than many others. That doesn't really have squat to do with the supply itself.
Mostly I'd say it's a combination of ramping up for the summer season, increased demand, and uncertainty surrounding Iran. I'm not sure what part if any that speculators play in prices at the pump rather than the cost of crude oil, but I suppose it's possible. It's just as likely it's a convenient scapegoat, though.

The more I think about it the more it seems like the rise in gas prices is a result of increased demand at the pump which puts pressure of gas reserves. The result is a rise in price to keep the supply of gas in line with the predictions made by gas companies months ago. The inability of the consumer to respond to changes in price in the short term gives gas suppliers an incentive to have these short term shortages that result in price spikes.
Inelastic demand is not a good thing in market economies and the gas companies seem to be very good at taking advantage of this lately.
Theoretically one company would be able to step in and address the issue but there is more profit in all companies letting it happen.

Actually according to most economic recovery means increased demand on gas. Whether that leads to increased prices or not is another question.
Inflation in general is a sign of economic recovery, gas is easily the most sensitive item though.

I would accept a spike in domestic demand to be a legitimate reason for gas prices to increase but that would also fit my theory that gas supply is artificially tight because tight supply serves the suppliers.

Gasoline, not oil. Just means we have an excess of refinery capacity.
Oh, and you get huge tax credits for importing a bunch of gas, adding a bit of ethanol and then exporting it again.

I still haven't figured out how the local places in my area price gas to stay competitive. There is a truck stop near us that has regular unleaded for $3.55/gal, and the Shell station that is literally right across the street from it just raised their price to $3.99/gal. I don't get it.
