Groceries??

Umm, lol... Gotta think here... Haven't really gone grocery shopping in awhile... But if I do, I tend to overdo it...

I'm too lazy to cook...

Usually this. Can jump higher sometimes depending on what we buy that normally wouldn't have to in a week. Rice, coffee, eggs.. Stuff like that

If I decide to eat out a couple of times it will go up a bit, and drunk Jimmy Johns tends to add a few on top lol.

When I was in college, I just ate on campus all the time. We had these meal cards that were part of our overall housing costs and I could use it as many times as I wanted per day, in any of the cafeterias or restaurants on campus (we had like a Taco Bell and stuff on-campus too).

So, to sum up, I never really bought groceries. I probably spent $50 a week on alcohol, though, but I worked part-time all through college so I could afford to do crap like that easily.

When I was in college, I spent about $30/week on groceries and $10 on my weekly trip to Applebee's.

I go through a big bag of chicken breasts every 1.5-2 days so I usually end up with ~$60 in chicken breasts

then whatever the cost of olive oil, brown rice, and oatmeal when I run out

I don't get how some people can live on anything much less, wtf do you people eat trash all day and/or are 2 feet tall so metabolic requirements don't matter much?

Unless you have some nice hookups, if you are eating 20$ or less worth of food a week you are probably doing more harm than good.

I spend about 600 a month on groceries now.

Back in college it was around 60 a month. I would have starved if it wasn't for girlfriends feeding me. tongue

I thought college kids lived on ramen, mac and cheese, and hot dogs?

Yeah I'm at about the $50 range. I wouldn't be comfortable going any lower than that, though I know a lot of people do it. I'd be interested to know how Sliyurs pulls it off.

Oh and DE sounds like he led a baller life in college.

Heh, during my last quarter of college, one of my assignments was to create a blog, so I made one about eating on $40/week.

I am guessing around 30-50 a week now that I am a grad student. When I was in undergrad it was $0... just used the dining plan on campus/had a scholarship that paid for it.

I also eat pretty healthy... usually salmon/chicken for dinner... rice/salad and some fruit... I do buy at Sam's club so usually buy in bulk too.

I honestly have found it cheaper to make my own food than buying cheap/crap food.

Its called being poor and making just too much money to get any aid for food, health insurance, or rent. I'd rather eat $30 of food a week and have a comfortable bed to sleep in than eat like a king and live in a van down by the river.

Buying things on sale and freezing works for me. There is no way in hell I'm paying premium for chicken breasts when there are tons of other meats that cost almost half as much per pound. And no, I'm not talking trotters and crap like that.

Best purchase lately was a 17-pound pork shoulder we got for less than a buck a pound. Cut it up, froze most, lasted a hell of a long time and was really tasty.

Well, I basically eat sandwiches for every meal lol. They can be very cheap.

Breakfast = oatmeal, lunch = sandwich, dinner = a variety of things, this is really the only meal I spend money on. Lot of chicken and rice or seafood (I get seafood basically free from the family since they are all fisherman in Alaska).

What in the world are trotters? confused

When we were in college about 15 years ago we spent roughly $30-40 a week on food. We didn't have any kind of a meal plan on campus either. We were able to keep it down a lot because there was this awesome store in the city where we lived that sold "damaged" goods. Like cases of noodles where a few boxes had gotten a little squished on top and just didn't look very pretty, things like that. They also had frozen meats, dairy, etc. for really good prices.
