Note to silly basketball activity posters... see my thread title, that's how you let people who don't care about your activity, know not to open the thread.

Now onto the meat and potatoes of the thread. Who do you think made the best move this off season? I don't mean who spent the most money on superstars to win the WS this year. I mean the BEST move in improving their team.

Right now I think my Buccos are at the top (Pirates for those unaware.) A.J. isn't going to win us the Series this year or even get us in the playoffs, but for what we gave up to get him and the amount he is going to improve our pitching rotation I think its hands down the best deal this off-season.

The Angels, easily. Even without Pujols they made the best offseason moves. Stacked their rotation.

The Pujols signing will be a horrible move by the Angels in 5 years when he's getting older and not worth the money, and still has 5 years to go. In the mean time though yeah he pretty much fits on any team.

I'm afraid the Tigers will find Prince Fielder in a similar situation. Prince is still young so the deal doesn't look as bad but when either Fielder or Pujols slide into the DH role and make *THAT* kind of money, and you can't do anything to get them off the books, those clubs might be on rough times. In the here and now though they could be great teams.

I dont think age will be that much a matter to Fielder, he's younger than Pujols (and we dont even really know how old Pujols is). Whats going to kill Fielder is that he's fat.

The Angels? Really? They made a lateral move by signing Pujols. He might be in his prime now, but they have a couple of decent first baseman on their roster, including Morales who has been pretty great before he broke his leg. The Pirates made some solid moves, the Reds got Madson on a super cheap deal. The Tigers gave a ridiculous contract to Fielder but are in a position to give out ridiculous contracts. It's tough to say, the A's made off with a ton of prospects.

I'm going to saaaaaaaay, the Nationals. The Edwin Jackson signing is probably very underrated by casual fans.

Small ball doesnt mean anything though regarding Pujols, to play small ball you need to hit for higher averages, Pujols is one of the best average hitters in baseball.

I view pujols as a good sign because it makes Morales good trade bait now. A contender who needs a good bat will give up a lot for Morales. Even if pujols is useless in a few years, I think he'll bring a Championship to the Angels before that. Especially with that rotation.

I think the Tigers signing fielder is just awful. He's going to break down quickly imo, and he's not worth that kind of money.

contending for what?
1 playoff appearance (lost) in 6 years isn't what i would call contending.

as far as Pujols comments...his numbers have declined over the last few years, and while still a great player, he just doesn't seem to fit the 1st to 3rd philosophy.
it's also not my original thought, heard it plenty of times.

lol. Look at Pujol's stats. He's the best hitter since Ruth. Even with his numbers declining, he's still been the best hitter out there for several years.

Oh, can't forget he dominated in last years playoffs to win a world series.

I don't get my baseball info from ESPN. There are many many better sources.

But don't worry, a career .328 hitter, 445 HR's and over 1300 RBI's is only ESPN. He didn't actually do those things.

once in 5 years Pujols has hit his career average.

Atlanta contending for division since their last division crown in 2005.

2011 13 games back
2010 6 games back
2009 7 games back
2008 20 games back
2007 5 games back
2006 18 games back

take your casual fan BS and shove it...OH...and who cares about a DIVISION crown? laugh

Hey, remember when Seattle was running away with their division! tongue

So they were in contention most of those years. And contention doesn't mean where they finished. Last year the M's lost 17 in a row. Putting them out of contention!

That's like calling the Pirates a contender the past 4 years... We've been in the hunt up until the last 1/4 of the season for the past 4 years... then Nutting starts his firesales.

you are not a contender when you finish double digits behind, which has been 3 of the last 6.

if you say so...feel free to link a definition where it relates to sports.
dont forget though, when you ARE considering contention in sports, there is a realism aspect as well.

regardless of when you want to ignore the reality of baseball, even beyond what you or i see as contending, when a team hasn't won a post season series in over a decade and in 7 post season appearances since after 1999 only have won ONE series, it takes more than being close to first in the division at some point in a season to consider them really in contention of anything.

I consider it to be a measure of excitement for fans. The braves contending for a division title is exiting as it would be for any team besides the rays. You can contend up until the last month of the season and drop out of contention by losing 17 in a row. The team still cashed in on all those tickets sold because they were contenders. Baseball is weird and that's why its awesome.

Wild Card standings.

Atlanta 1 gb 2011
Atlanta won WC 2010
Atlanta 5 gb 2009
Atlanta 18 gb 2008
Atlanta 5.5 gb 2007

Looks to me they were damn close to making the playoffs each year, with the exception of 2008.

No, it's not. That's a bad/good week. 5 games is nothing in baseball.

And my definition of contending is Playoff spot, because the division title means jacksh**.

Happened twice last year. With bigger leads. within the top 8 teams.

And it happens all season long. Never has there been a team with a 5 game lead in April that hasn't lost it.

Sox, which was of epic proportions which certainly was not the norm...and who else?

and i'm not talking the beginning of the season.
as i said above, you would have to consider the Blue Jays a contender based on their early season every year.

i'm talking 5 games at the end when it matters.

if you're back 5 games in the last 2 weeks, it's not a lock that you will be the WC.

so they closed a 6 game gap down to 1 over what time frame?

problem is, they didn't make it all the way, nor did they when they came the closest to the WC of 5 and 5.5.

somewhat, not so much the NL, but i know enough to know not to consider the Braves a contender.
i was mostly in shock from the Sox collapse.

Tigers dropped a ridiculous lead to force a one game playoff a couple years ago, which they lost to the Twins.

good job with that!
rather funny that someone who says a team has been a contender when in REALITY, they finished in double digits behind in their division.

Sometimes the best moves are the ones not made.

While teams like the angels and Marlins were active it doesnt mean they had a great offseason. Signing tons of players to crazy contracts doesnt always help your ball club.

The Yankees without making any major signing were able to shore up their rotation and they still got the same line up.

Prince Fielder is a great hitter but now we got nowhere for miggy to play so they had to move him over to 3b and most think the last few years of Princes contract are going to be a burden for the Tigers. Not to mention now the Tigers have 3 20 million players not sure how many they can afford still need other playrs to fill out the roster lol.

sure i could, but let me guess, you will just accuse me of looking them up first right?

Chipper Jones and D-Lowe (who i wish the sox never let go) are easy ones...

please explain what that has to do with anything.
while you are at that lame explanation, explain how 13 games out of the division is a contender.

You'd have to think we are cursed with some of the teams we put on the field in the last 100 years.

and 3-5 years imo. 3 being super generous. 5 before he gets run out of the front office by the Cubs fans who think our club should be stacked with Pujols and prince right now.
