Subject: When I download a 20+ gig file I wonder about compression
Things still seem to essentially use zip -- which was the "new thing" and better in general than arc back in my BBS days...

But online games etc have moved to digital delivery in general and the files just get larger and larger. I mean I was considering giving AoC another chance but 30 gigs seems like quite the download.

It just seems to me like the kinds of files that go into a game (most of what is being sent is graphics data) could be compressed better? Have there been huge leaps that are not being used for one reason or another?

I would guess they don't compress much anymore because of how fast most networks are. The NEED for compression is much smaller than it used to be. Winzip was GREAT when DSL was king and cable speed networks were an average of under 5 megs..

But at least in theory couldnt you get 5 times better compression than winzip on graphics files?

Wait, this is the setup file from Funcom? Or from a third party?

Maybe?

Would you rather take an hour (random number) to download the file or would you rather take 45 minutes (random number again) to download the file and then also having to install some other compression program to extract the files you just downloaded (assuming they were NOT supported by WinZip)?

Just going by what I read about it. Remember it is free to play now and has an expansion etc so it has grown with time.

---------

As for if I would want it to include a program to extract it -- sure -- it shouldnt be that bad -- although you could make it SELF-EXTRACTING as well and remove that step.

I would think that that level of compression would save the companies money as well.

who doesn't dl at a minimum of 6megs/sec these days? 20+ gig files for games aren't that common either.

Their initial setup file is 20MB. How large the actual client is I don't know and their stupid site isn't graceful enough to make readily apparent.

Meh, A software / game developer doesn't have the same kind of bandwidth (if any at all) caps we as consumers do.

32 gigs is large for a MMO client. But be that as it may, I think this is much ado about what you can't control. If their download scheme is at all contemporary then you will have to use their setup client (20MB) and that will download the files, already compressed or not. What I would do is start the process and see what the actual DL is going to amount to either in size or time and then decide from there if you want to continue.

120MB Connection, no usage limits, I pay no attention to filesize anymore.

Comcast has a 250 GB monthly limit so I think twice before using 20+ gigs of it all at once.
