I think implementation wise it is the best MMO out right now. it has tons of awesome things that are implemented in a far better way than even newer MMOs. trade skills. Player housing. Guild advancement. Faction advancement, etc.

I played for a couple months at release and it wasn't great. But it's tons better now. If you haven't played it in a while you should check it out. Don't delete your old toons though. They grandfathered it so old timers can play any race or class as long is it was created before free to play.

I played it a month ago and while the servers were stable the framerate was not. For an eight year old game you'd think any modern system could run it flawlessly, but it was running choppy at best on mine. A Google search told me this was a common issue, as the game was apparently designed to take advantage of hardware that will be introduced after the coming enslavement of earth by aliens untold years more advanced than us.

For what it is it's good. But what it is is still a super dated MMO in a lot of ways.

It has a fundamental flaw: no PVP.

(yes there are 2 super mangled ruleset servers with it, beside the point)

Mind you the old graphics engine when I played was so sluggish and badly optmized even on modern rigs because:

It barely used the graphics card, did the rendering in software. (true story)

Beyond retarded for a game released at that time.

That's what they mean by the BS "oh guys it's super advanced tech that's gonna look awesome in 2056".
Meaning it's gonna look naff even when running on highly efficient 16-core 8Ghz CPUs, just barely at nominal speed.

EQ2's story is essentially: "we tried getting an EQ successor out, then WOW came with a similar game and stole the show so we crashed and burned. boo hoo."

DAOC is still better than most MMOs out there too, if only they would
revamp controls and UI...I would play it even with old graphics
that most people find ugly

I remember when people thought it would beat Wow lol

Sony screwed things up by making their games have so many pointless and evil time sinks. EQ 1 was pure torture the things they made the player go through like corpse runs and more

EQ2 is way less hardcore than EQ1. I think its problem was actually that it straddled the line and pleased no one. The hardcore EQ1 fans stuck with EQ1, and the casual folks turned off by EQ1 went to wow instead. So it ended up without much of a natural demographic.

Also so much of the compelling content is only compelling if you played EQ1. So you miss like 75% of the fun if you never played EQ1. And the rest of the compelling low level content is all group stuff and the population of low level characters is so low that you rarely get to experience that either any more without going way out of your way for it.

I had zero problems with lag playing EQ2 back when it first came out.

Edit: i really liked EQ2 but nobody was playing it (finding groups was diffiult) so i ended up quitting. I think the graphics are too old now though..

I played a lot of EQ2 up to about a year ago. It had a lot of good qualities and I'll probably visit again someday. There IS plenty to do solo, but, you really need a group to get the most out of it.

I'm having a lot of fun. The things they did that were definitely punishing time sinks have always had interesting mechanics and systems. It's just that they took way too long. now they have made most things pretty quick.

Their mentoring and chrono systems are great. AA makes a lot of sense and adds a lot of value. there is still a raid tilt to the game that I will probably never get into, but the rest of it seems pretty fun.

I don't understand why your systems are sometimes having trouble. My 5 year old pentium 4 with a 6770 graphics card I bought for like 150 bones a couple years ago plays it just great.

EQ2 was overly ambitious at launch. They designed it so that no hardware running at launch could effectively max the game, used famous actors for voicework, impressive orchestrals for the music, and so forth. The problem is that all of this really didn't matter when gameplay was mediocre, and World of Warcraft was picking up steam. I've gone back to it a few times. I enjoy the gameplay of my swashbuckler. Now that it's F2P I might check it out again.

Heh. My main is a swashbuckler, too. I like stealth classes.

I'd say my main problem with EQ2 is all the button mashing. I think my swashie's regular attack sequence involved hitting 14 buttons in order, then do the cool down two step. It just gets to be tedious after a while. My warden, which is also a fun class, didn't have as long a sequence, but, wardens do so little DPS, I'd have to cycle through the sequence 50 times to kill something. Well...maybe not 50 times, but, you get the idea. <g>

But, some of the long quest chains were fun. J-Boots. The magic carpet. The class hat. The incredibly long To Speak As A Dragons series. Great feeling of satisfaction when you finished one of those.

This is one of the most unforgivably bad parts of the game. Each class literally has at least 5-10 abilities that all do basically the same thing, all on 15-30 second cool downs, for aboslutely no reason anyone can fathom.

The only game I've found that was able to involve me enough with pve that I didn't care that it had no pvp was FF11. I did a trial for eq2 years back and wasn't really all too impressed. Especially when you're forced to be a fairy on this little island with no other options. I don't see how they thought that would get people to like the game.
