Subject: How do you handle high pressure salesmen?
We were walking out of Costco last night and noticed so AC equipment for sale. I asked the guy there is he worked for Costco or the company he was repping. He said he worked for the AC company. I asked if they did installations and he said yes. I told him I was getting bids for ductless units. He said they could do that. I told them my square footage and that I wanted 2 registers inside and one unit outside. He said he couldn't put 2 on one unit. I told him I had one bid and another coming by people that said they could. He said they could do it for a little over 6k. I told him that was higher than the bid we already had. He said, "You better make sure they do it right!"

I told him, "I would rather someone sell me an item based on its own merits than to sell me something by talking bad about other companies."

He tried to call me back and I said, "I don't want to hear anything else you have to say."

I haven't paid them my money yet.

I can decide NOT to buy anything from them.

That gives me enough power over their "pressure" to not allow any of it to bother me.

He has a point, though he should have been more diplomatic about it. You should find out a bit about your first bid, make sure they got a decent reputation. It has gotten real cut throat in the home trades the last few years. Everyone seems to want the cheapest price possible and companies that under normal circumstances would have been run out of business for poor standards and bad work are getting lots of work because they are rock bottom bids.

Yeah, I've already researched both these companies and they have been in business a very long time. And I have researched the equipment also. And I already thought Mitsubishi was a good brand.

But still, while he may have a point I think I do too. Him doing crap like that is very politician like. Sell me what you have based on it's merits. If it's truly a better value than your competitors I will know it. And it might be better. but I will not talk to you once you do this.

For some reason, I tend to go into angry, non-commital mode when confronted with a high-pressure salesman. They'll put a spin on something negative to make it seem positive, for example, and I'll just stare at them unnervingly or say something incredibly rude.

24 hour fitness practices that crap. I got pissed, told then no multiple times, explained to them why they didn't need my credit card to make a $0 charge to lock in a price and started walking out.

They caught up to me before I got to the door and gave me a free 7 day pass, which I tossed in their garbage almost immediately.

Last week I had a salesperson at radio shack ask me 3 times if I wanted a $1 warranty on an $8 cable. After 2 polite no replies I told him "I don't want your fking warranty, do you want to sell me the cable or not?" He never said another word. tongue

Maybe. When someone crosses that threshold with me I just totally disengage with them. And it's forever. I think some things should just be part of common sense with all normal people.

I also don't like when someone, such as a car salesman, tells you their lowest price. Then when you decide not to buy they want to lower it again. I know that's the game. But I don't like that game. And I don't like someone trying to sell me a warranty. Such as for a DVD player. They try to sell a warranty to make more. I will always get pissed and tell them no. Do you sell poor quality products on purpose?

A lot of it is recognizing it as a game, and enjoying it for what it is.

When someone tries to sell me an extended warranty, I tell them that I'll buy it if they sell it to me for 20% of the price they've quoted me.

They never do, but that way you get THEM to say "no" instead of you. "I'd love to have the protection you're offering, but it's only really worth XX to me, so if you'll sell it at that price, I'll take it, otherwise, just ring me up."

I posted about this awhile ago, but I got an email from a dealership wanting to "buy" my car. I took it in for them to appraise because what was the harm in it? The guy acted impressed with the condition of the car and gave me a really low ball quote. Of course I declined, and I told him what I wanted for it. He went and spoke to his boss and offered me the price I stated but only for a trade-in. So I told them about the car I am looking at (Mazda CX9) and they said they had a similar vehicle (Mitzubishi Outlander) that was "way better" than a CX-9. So I sat there while they tried to sell me this car nodding and smiling the whole time. I kept saying "no, we like the cx9". An hour or so later they said they could try to locate a used cx9 and contact me as soon as they do. In the mean time I had to promise I would research the outlander (which I did, and like I suspected, it was crap). They said they would contact me in the next few days, but they never did and a couple days later we went to Oregon and bought the car we wanted.
