ESPN's headline about Jeremy Lin's bad game.

http://deadspin.com/5886218/espns-headline-writers-join-in-the-linsanity-chink-in-the-armor-edition

Apparently ESPN hires racists like Fallen_Daemon to write their headlines.

At ESPN we are aware of three offensive and inappropriate comments made on ESPN outlets during our coverage of Jeremy Lin.

Saturday we apologized for two references. We have since learned of a similar reference Friday on ESPN Radio New York. The incidents were separate and different. We have engaged in a thorough review of all three and have taken the following action:

• The ESPN employee responsible for our Mobile headline has been dismissed.

• The ESPNEWS anchor has been suspended for 30 days.

• The radio commentator is not an ESPN employee.

We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.

ESPN is f****** retarded, this incident didn't prove to me how retarded they are, I knew long ago.

I stopped watching ESPN last year at the peak of Tebowmania, enough is enough.

ESPN, like any news source, feeds on what the majority of the public are interested it any any given time.

Both Tebow and Lin are some of the most polarizing figures in sports, so it only makes sense to focus on them.

Everything is opinion, and take it with a grain of salt. Some people get way too worked up about isht.

The coverage of Lin is just ridiculous, it's not just ESPN. I'm watching ABC right now as the Knicks take on the Mavericks, and the pre game intro described Lin as "the legend".

Yes..the legend who led his team to 7 of 8 regular season wins. They'll build a statue of him in Central Park for this.

F****** New York fans, I hate them. Most ridiculous sports fanbase ever.

Ah damn...I hate the hype but I gotta admit, Lin is pretty damn amazing.

28 points 12 assists on 11-19 shooting...WTF, this ain't no fluke

and 4 steals and 7 turnovers...still turns it over way too much

i wasn't talking about the damn racial slur, but the ripping on ESPN in general. it's entertainment. the fact they focus on lin and tebow is b/c it gets people riled up, one way or another.

i get your point. the Lin craze is a combination of two things.

1) never has their before been an asian player in the NBA (besides Yao who was gifted with ginormous size) with this much talent.

2) NY hasn't even been in the conversation in a decade. if Lin were on another big market team like Boston/LA/Chicago, he'd be a story, but those teams have been good for a long time now. The fact that he's pretty much single-handedly turned around a franchise, combined w/ the fact he's asian... it's a huge story and deserves the hype.

He's probably a slight-better-than-average point guard but he's rejuvenated an entire team and city with his story. it's cool to see, and I'm no NY fan.

I honestly think any player that came in and made the Knicks win 8 out of 9 would have received similar treatment. The NY media hopped on the Amare/Melo bandwagon too, it just didn't take off because they didn't win many games.

Knicks fans are so hungry for even an above average team, that they'll over hype anything and everything that causes them to win a few.

The Lin story is a genuinely amazing story but the media is doing the kid no favors. Way too much pressure and hype. 1 more weel of this and there'll be a backlash, people are gonna start hating Lin and the Knicks just like they started to hate Tebow and the Broncos...all due to media over coverage.

im a sacramento kings fan, so you can understand my unbiasedness toward the rest of the teams in the NBA. i enjoy the sport, and the only team i truly dislike is the lakers (b/c of what they did to us in the early 2000s)

anyways, love rose and what he's done for the bulls. dude's a stud, and could easily win back-to-back MVP this season. you're right about his lack of hype, not sure why exactly. i think the fact Jordan owned that city for so long, it's some big shoes to fill, no matter who and how good you are.

the media is designed to raise people up, and tear them down. they NEED stories like this to survive. if all they did was recap scores each night, very little viewers would tune in. it's in human nature to be fascinated with an old-fashioned underdog story, and the fact Tebow and Lin are both vocally religious, makes them controversial underdog stories. this is the media dream, and the media LIVES for these story lines, no matter the effect on the person involved.

it's going to be tough for the kid at times, but to him i'm sure it beats the practice squad and getting cut every few months.

My problem with all this is that I actually tune into to sports networks in order to learn more about the league. I can't watch all these games so I rely on NBA TV and ESPN to let me know about whats going on. Not only who wins and loses, but also indepth player analysis for both NBA and NFL.

When they ignore that, and dedicate most of their time covering Tebow or Lin, eventually I will lose interest. I want to hear about what Tyreke Evans is doing. I want to hear about how Kemba Walker is doing. I want to hear about how and why the Spurs are so hot right now. But when you have 45 minutes of of an hour dedicated to Jeremy Lin and then only with 15 minutes left you have analysts saying "ok, now lets finally talk about the defending champs the Dallas Mavericks..."

it strikes me not only as bizarre but also unprofessional, uninformative and irresponsible.

Sad part is he had 5 or so assists in the first half and 0 turnover. He just gets in trouble when he gets deep on a drive and tries to send a miracle pass to someone.

Yeah as a headline with racist intentions it makes 0 sense. He didn't use any play on words or anything. Is he saying Lin is wearing armor?

It's possible the writer is really unaware, and was trying to be more clever by using what he thought was a word innocuously linked to Asians. Or that he's a closet racist and wanted to sneak the word in...

Or he had zero clue, and is very unlucky for wanting to use that turn of phrase.

He's still playing at a similar level to lots of other great young PGs... it's people ignorant of the NBA who think his skills are unprecedented (even if his specific circumstances may be).

Furthermore Jeremy Lin isn't even a rookie. He is just starting on his team for the first time. He is a hard worker so when he was not starting, I assume he was doing everything possible to make himself ready to play. That was basically his job description too.

Not even the best PGs in the nba are putting up 25/9 on 50% shooting. But the problem is a low sample. He's played the best out of anybody in the NBA for this 9 game stretch but...it probably won't continue.

His court vision, confidence, poise, leadership and clutchness are impressive though.

Yeah, point guards can light it up in their first 7 starts but how many of those are virtually unknown before they get those starts? That's what really makes his circumstances unique. If he was highly recruited out of high school and a first round draft pick, it wouldn't be a story.

The assist aren't too impressive when you look at his assist/turnover ratio. And part of his individual success is attributable to the team effort, Amare Stoudemire is one of the best forwards in the league, Tyson Chandler and Landry Fields have been playing very well. Lin is a player who on another team could be producing a lot less. But Lin is definitely succeeding at the leader role and making his team flow.

I'm not saying he won't be a premier PG in the league, though. He's just hasn't earned a legend status by any means yet (and not even elite status, although it looks like he at least has a chance of winning playoffs).

This is when stats totally don't tell the whole story though. Fact is, this kid came in and made his mates believe and now they're winning games. Who cares about an ast/tv ratio when they're winning? I mean Linning.

I wasn't arguing against any of that, just that his individual skills are not unprecedented. It's the team chemistry he is making which is the larger factor here.

Yeah. do you get the feeling like teams don't know how to defend him yet? They play him for the drive then he raises up and nails a 3pointer in their face. They stick close to him and he slips past the defense and tosses up a crazy offbalance reverse that somehow goes in.

What is this kid actually good and bad at? nobody knows. His 3pt% says that he's a sucky 3pt shooter but when you watch the games it doesn't seem like that at all. How the hell can a kid shoot 28% from 3 yet constantly nails all these clutch 3pt shots?

Yeah, that. But it is without question the only reason they used that metaphor is because Lin is Asian-american.

I'm not a big believer in team chemistry. The guy makes some amazing assists and that makes his entire team better. Not because he is liked by the team. If he was a horrible player but had all the chemistry in the world, then all of the sudden the narrative is different.

Remember, Mike Dantoni is the coach and you know how frenetic he likes his offense. He needed a Steve Nash to make it work and viola! He has one.

You can see amazingly skillful passes made by tons of players in the NBA. Team chemistry is a phenomenon involving a lot more than being liked. Chemistry is the mental synergy of the players, everyone working well together and making plays up on the fly. Most teams will fail without strong chemistry.

He's very clever and focused, so his defenders MUST play attentive and active defense. With 82 game seasons I think many players go on automatic to some extent. There will still be many players who won't be able to adapt to defend him, Steve Nash still makes whole teams look silly on defense, and Jeremy Lin is younger/stronger (same height, 20 more lbs). But you don't have the risk of unstoppable athletic plays like you did with a young Kobe, for example. There might be some smart and more physically adept defenders who will hold him off, more likely in the playoffs.

The "Chink in the armor" editor issued an apology.

http://deadspin.com/5886504/

"This had nothing to do with me being cute or punny," Anthony Federico told the Daily News.

"I'm so sorry that I offended people. I'm so sorry if I offended Jeremy."

[...]

Federico, 28, said he understands why he was axed. "ESPN did what they had to do," he said.

He said he has used the phrase "at least 100 times" in headlines over the years and thought nothing of it when he slapped it on the Lin story.

Federico called Lin one of his heroes - not just because he's a big Knicks fan, but because he feels a kinship with a fellow "outspoken Christian."

"My faith is my life," he said. "I'd love to tell Jeremy what happened and explain that this was an honest mistake."

They had a replay of the play by play on the radio this morning

I think it was taken out of context (talking about this radio guy, not ESPN)

he meant it like it sounds. a chink in hte armor.. an achilles heal type of thing

but in this PC world we live in, its going to offend someone

That's like having a headline that says "A Spade is a Spade" then having a big picture of a black person underneath.

What! Thats not racist! The word 'spade' is not racist! People these days, get offended by everything.

Lin is getting this much press for one reason, and it has nothing to do with him being Asian. He was literally 5 days away from NOT BEING IN THE LEAGUE ANYMORE.

Then he leads NYK to 6 wins in a row, while putting up better stats than almost any rookie starter EVER. THAT is why it's so OMFG LIN WTF!!!

That, and he plays for the Knicks. If he was on any other team doing the exact same thing, nobody except NBA fans would even care.

It would still be a story. Your little "Well Rose turned around the Bulls and he didn't get this much press" thing doesn't work, because he was expected to.

I once used the phrase "fade to black" after a movie faded out as an interacial couple started to get intimate. I was being a racist and it was meant as a double entendre. I thought I was being clever. I wasn't. The phrase "fade to black' is not inherently racist. The problem was that I was using it in a racist way.

Similarly the phrase "chink in the armor" is not inherently racist. The phrase has probably been used longer than "Chink" has been used as a racial slur. To say this use of the phrase was racist assumes we know the intent or frame of mind of the user. We do not know this.

It doesn't matter if it was intended to be racist, all that matters is that people were offended by it and some perceived it as being racist. You can't upset a bunch of folks when you work in media, n omatter what intentions you have...you gonna get fired.
