Subject: Mike Ferguson on Guild Wars 2 World vs. World
http://www.arena.net/blog/mike-ferguson-on-guild-wars-2-world-vs-world
From the earliest days of development, we knew that we wanted to include some form of large-scale PvP combat in Guild Wars 2, but how would it work? We knew right away that we wanted three teams fighting against one another on a series of huge maps in the Mists (our world vs. world battleground) and that each team would be composed of an entire server full of players. Including three forces in world vs. world acts as an excellent balancing factor, preventing one team from growing too powerful and ruining the competitive balance of the game. Two teams can gang up to counter a more dominant third team, a dynamic that simply isn’t possible with only two opposing factions.

We dreamed of a game where players could work together to capture objectives on the battlefield, like keeps and towers, claiming them for their guilds, then fortifications before defending them against hordes of attackers. With players from three different servers fighting each other, we knew that we would need a lot of different areas for them to fight over, and we wanted to have plenty of locations for guilds of all sizes to claim as their own. With this in mind, we created a number of different objectives that are designed to be captured and contested by large groups, small groups, or even just a few players.

To provide enough area to hold all these objectives and a wide variety of terrain, we needed to make some absolutely gigantic maps—four of them.

We gave each of the three teams a home map called the Borderlands, where they would have some advantage as the home team. We also created a fourth, central map called the Eternal Battlegrounds that has its own unique features, including a massive central keep. These are the largest maps we can make in Guild Wars 2, and we use as much space as we possibly can in order to accommodate over a hundred people from each server fighting on every map.

Each objective on a map is worth points for the team that captures it. We periodically tally the point total for each server and add that total to their War Score, which accumulates over the length of a persistent two-week battle.

Every Guild Wars 2 server competes in battles in the Mists.

At the end of each battle, every team is given a new ranking. Once a battle ends and team rankings are updated, servers are matched up based on their new ranking and a new battle commences. Downtime between these epic battles lasts only a few minutes—just long enough for us to tally the final scores, update the server rankings, and create new matches—so there’s almost always a battle for the Mists going on.

Like I've said before, GW2 sounds great on paper, but I'm not going to believe a damn thing they say until an open beta at least.

I read the whole article and it really is a carbon copy of the daoc frontiers, even down to the presence of relics.

Which is a good thing. Daoc had a great overall pvp concept. It was just bad at the details.

Hopefully GW2 will take the same concept and deliver on it more competently.

This. WvWvW is honestly why I am stoked for GW2. Sure the PvE looks entertaining, but I am kinda tired of PvE, no matter how well executed it is.

I agree, I'm just laughing because he could have written "Make DAoC 2" instead of completely describing the DAoC system in detail as if it was new, different and possibly even a revelatory concept.

"when it is ready"

That has been their response to pretty much all time frame questions. The press is getting into beta this weekend, but they will have a week or two NDA cause Arena Net doesn't want them playing for a couple hours then writing hype articles without experiencing the game.

I was reading their Reddit Q&A and DAOC was brought up many times.

A handful of employees jumped on to say that DAOC is their favorite PVP mmo ( some of them still play apparently)

There's too much I heard about GW2 that I don't like. Lack of dedicated healer classes and arcadefication of combat are two examples.

Those are both awesome changes overall. Although I agree in the context of mass RVR I'm not sure how well they will work out.

Well I for one love to play dedicated healers, so for me it's a bad change. Depending on how it works out that alone could be a game breaker. That's my personal opinion. Having to parry/dodge whatever myself is another. I can see where it would be fun, but not in this genre. Again a game breaker.

Looks like I will probably pass, which is a shame because GW2 does have some promising "RvR" ideas.

Okay just for you I promise not to pass until 6 months after release. By then it's usually decided if an MMO has any long term appeal.

dont freaking jack it up people. make your beta good and the game better. dont care if it takes 3 more years. tired of all these failed MMO's that get so hyped up only to be a crap game on release. take your time do it right and take the player input when making decisions.

So far every single MMO that came out in the last 8 years or so has been hyped by some of you as the second coming of DAoC that will save us all. The Outpost has a perfect prediction record of zero.

Bad news: GW2 may be coming to the consoles.

This means that the PC interface will likely suck balls since everything will be dumbed down for the Xbox untermenschen. And they will be tempted to scale back the graphics dramatically to make it more compatible with the obsolete technology of the 360/PS3.

It also means that us of the PC master race must play with said untermenschen. frustrated

It also means that us of the PC master race must play with said untermenschen. frustrated

I would be playing DC Online if it was created to be played on the PC

I saw some of the screens but those keeps are effing massive. I would have been happy with NF sized keeps+ towers maybe a little bigger but that looks like it'l create some really epic battles.

My wife and I will be playing Guild Wars 2.

Rogues, of course.

Simply for the World vs World vs World scenarios.

It basically seems like DAoC 2.

I hven't found anything really exciting @ mmorpgs since DAoC pre-ToA.

I mostly played on Mordred and it was alot of fun PvP as a stealther.

Then ToA happened...

MoP is going to do to Blizzard what ToA did to Mythic, jump the shark (if int hasn't done so already)

I don't like what Blizzard is doing to the rogue talents.

I never liked PvE. Same Same AI etc....

Monk class is just a sign of desperation and Pokeman games, WTF???

All that being said, in the many years, I have never advocated a game on the Outpost before.

And most of the games mentioned by others failed.

But I am advocating this one.

See you all on the battlefield.

Yeah but we can at least make sure not to roll on the SAME server.

edit: Also, the server reshuffling is potentially genius. It is like an automatic balancing mechanism, assuming they match up good servers with good servers and bad servers with bad servers.

I rather like the idea of being able to dodge things. Never did enjoy having spells follow me around walls. This'll be more like BF3 where I can at least move out of the bullet spray.

The class selection for GW2 is quite limited. I hope they make up for it with various skilltrees within each class via Rift.

Class versatility is of the utmost importance to me.

There are a limited number of classes but a huge number of ways to play each one. Classes have a base skillset they can have, then their skillset also change drastically based on the kind of equipment they have equipped. So you can swap out roles on the fly that way. It's not that if you make a healer you're stuck doing nothing but that.

Weapon selection make a much bigger difference in GW2 than pretty much any other MMO; five of the skills on your skill bar are determined strictly by your weapon choice. So a dagger/dagger thief will play differently than a pistol/pistol thief who will play differently than a shortbow thief. The rest of your skills must also be chosen in advance. Unlike most MMOs where you can use any of your 30+ abilities at any time, you have to pick out the other five skills you have available. So during combat, different members of the same class will play different depending on which of the utility skills they picked.

There is also some sort of talent system, but they haven't released any details of how that will work since they last decided to scrap and rework it. grin

Sounds interesting. I give them credit for breaking the mold of MMO's with ideas on paper. Lets see how it translates into gameplay.

Regardless of these new mechanics, they had me at "three realms" applause

Having tons of options and skill trees in only as good as those options provide multiple ways of being effective. I'm always curious to see how the frenetic min/maxers find the breaks in the trees and quickly demonstrate why the majority of options suck and there is only one or two actually most effective path. Gogogo Earth Wizards!!

Yeah, that was what screwed RIFT. You had tons and tons of options but there was pretty much only a small handful of competitive builds despite all those options.

And on the no dedicated healer thing, you could play an engineer and have 9 of your skills be healing/buffing and maybe fit in 1 crowd control ability. It still won't play like a normal healer in other MMOs, but none of the classes play like their typical counterparts.

nothing wrong with dedicated healer specs as long as they spread healing and support abilities around.

It's a very different game. The only things they are really holding onto are the lore, art, and some aspects of PvP (with new types of PvP thrown in)

laying out all the changes would basically be describing 90% of the game, so I will leave it at very different.

i don't see all the excitement about capture the flag/location humping events.....it's the same thing that is in ever other fail wow clone game ...except now...you can have more than 5 people

adding more people to the same stupid "capture and hold" the whatever objects is not going to magically make it fun

You're dumb if you think gw2 pvp is the same as wow and all the wow clones

its exactly like NF. youve never researched it or looked anything up, your opinion and argument = invalid

I'm curious about their selling point that it will be easy for people to learn because they have the same ten buttons to mash from level 7 to the endgame. I'm not entirely sure that sounds as awesome as they think it does, but at least I can assume those ten buttons will be fairly important skills. grin

The 10 skills aren't locked down, you just have a choice of 10 skills at any one time that you can switch when you are not in combat.

Even during combat, while you do have 10 skills at once, characters have a weapon swap between two weapon sets (or attunement swap for elementalists) to let them switch out the first 5 skills on demand. There are also cases where some classes have skills to do the same (such as flamethrower for engineers or steal for thief).

Picking out the 10 skills that is bested suited for the upcoming situation is important. grin
