I am old and been away from ciphering for some time. I even took off my shoes and socks and still can not remember what this is called or how to calculate it. Probably easy for you smart college types. I have 5 pieces of different cheese. I have 5 pieces of different "lunch meat" How many sammich combinations can I make? Is this probabilities? I forget. And then in that exact example how many sammich possibilities are there? 5 x 5 = 25? Obviously my real world application is different things but same numbers. Anyone? Please and Thank you.

This is "combinations" If you were also counting sandwiches as different when the cheese was on the top rather than the bottom, you'd be talking about "permutations" Rho

Well, unless you count no meat or cheese as a possible combination. I consider a meat and no cheese or a cheese and no meat as a possibility.

Actually you have 36 (6x6) possibilities... This is because you can choose not to have cheese, or not to have meat, or just to have an empty bun in addition to the other 25 possibilities. Note -- If you also are allowed to have multiple meats and multiple cheeses on a single sandwich then it gets larger. Then it would be 2^5 meat combinations x 2^5 cheese combinations.... or 32 x 32 = 1024. That would allow for someone who wanted turkey roast beef and salami with provolone and swiss.

Thanks Rho. I used to be decent at math but I have not been able to remember what those were called for months now. For my simple example is it 25 possible sammichs?

The answer is 25 (if you don't care what order they are in and that every sandwich has to have both cheese and meat). If you allow sandwiches that leave out either meat or cheese, it's (6*6) - 1 = 35 (because you wouldn't make a sandwich with neither)

No, it's 24. Those other guys are counting the same combination twice.

Thanks all. You ACF'er are if nothing else, smart. My real world application is: I have 5 possible VPN connections I can use to connect to for work. After I get connected one of those, IF. Then, I have 5 possible SSL gateways connections to connect to for remote access. Finding a working combo everyday is proving more difficult daily and I was just curious how many "combinations" I had because it can take some time to get connected some days trying so many.
