The thing is,

When I was in grade school, we were told by our teachers that soon, the rainforest would be decimated and we would all die from lack of oxygen. We had to act now to save it or horrible consequences would happen. (Didn’t happen but filled us with fear.)

In high school, we were told that mass famines would happen “any day now” because our population is out of control and we don’t have enough food for everyone. (Didn’t happen but filled us with fear.)

http://www.amazon.com/Population-Bomb-Paul-R-Ehrlich/dp/1568495870/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329311062&sr=8-1

This man won a McArthur genius award and his book was required reading when I was in HS. Even though it is ridiculed now, it was considered fact at the time of printing. (read the comments, there are still people who think this is going to happen any day now...)

In college I was told we are approaching “peak oil” and soon we would run out of oil and, again, calamities will happen. (Didn’t happen.)

My only point in all of this is – when someone tells you the world is on the road to ruin, any day now, it usually isn’t.

If you look at the facts rather than the rhetoric, recycling really doesn’t help much, biofuel is a waste of resources, organic farming isn’t actually “better” and no, we’re not covering the world in garbage.

Did you know that we could comfortably put the entire population of the world in Texas? Everyone would have a five bedroom house. Look it up.

But don’t think I don’t see the benefits of certain things. I love windmills and solar and tide power and hate fossil fuels. I will and do pay more for free range eggs because I think factory farming is disgusting.

Anyway, I’m just saying that a lot of alarmist talk leads to nothing but making us feel bad.

There are approximately 7 Billion people on the planet.
Texas is approximately 268,581 sq miles.

That would be 26,062 people per square mile.

There are 27,878,400 square feet per square mile.

A typical 5 bedroom house is on average approximately 2,000 sq feet - not to mention any yard or land that might surround the house.

2,000 sq foot house * 26,062 people = 52,125,801.9

I think your math is off a bit, not to mention the logistics of pulling off any kind of healthy or sustainable living with that kind of population density...

So, you don't think that rainforest decimation has been ongoing, that famines don't happen and that crazy things like wars never happen over securing plentiful supplies of oil? laugh

Welcome to the Outpost! Unfortunately, we're out of dunce caps with the recent arrivals of Dae_twat and Orly, but I'm sure you can find a seat among the group nonetheless.

"Well, the initial calculation was done by Thomas Sowell in 1984, when the world's population was 4.4 billion. http://www.carlopelanda.com/econaut/...n%20Growth.htm
Quote:
In 1984, it was proven by the economist Thomas Sowell that the entire world population (4.4 billion at the time) could live comfortably in the state of Texas. He wrote “Every human being on the face of the Earth could be housed in the state of Texas in one-story, single-family homes, each with a front and a back yard. A family of four would thus have 6,800 square feet- about the size of the typical middle-class American home with front and backyards.”(Carter 99) According to more recent research on the topic, all of the world’s 1997 population (5.84 billion) could fit on the small Island of Bali in Indonesia.(Stiefel 98)"

Can you extrapolate the point?

They wouldn't be comfortable, they're isn't enough room for farming, etc, but the point being - there is room for more people.

Ok that would be 16,392 people per square mile.

Average 2,000 square foot house with 5 bedroom = 32,764,789.77 square foot needed per square mile.

Again - your math ain't be right...

The problem with the human population is not that there isn't enough space on the world for them to live on. Trust Thomas Sowell - one of the dumbest men ever to have a successful writing career - to make that argument.

And he's not even wrong that the earth can support more people than we currently have. He just goes about arguing his point in a very dumb way.

The funniest thing about this whole issue is that hemp is the most efficient form of ethanol fuel yet it is illegal for American farmers to grow, we have to import it. People can't even get high off hemp. This is a prime example of why government should just get the hell out of the way because in the end, they don't know what the market wants.

Desnoxvu has a good point.

1 acre of hemp = 4.1 acres of trees. tell me why it's better to cut down trees instead

It's much more time and resource efficient to use hemp for everything we need trees for.

A lot of the world leaders including US office holders firmly believe in population control. Maybe someone should ask them why China who has less land and natural resources is having faster economic growth than the US who has a lot less people.

Peak oil has possibly occurred already. We aren't positive yet in part thanks to the economic downturn which has reduced demand. So the fact that production has been below peak for the past few years my be because of that or some other "noise" in the production.

And it won't be an immediate calamity as the oil production levels are still pretty high for quite a while. So even if we are at a peak, it could be another 5-10-20 years before we really feel the effects aside from steadily creeping up prices for everything that depends on oil.

Regardless, there is most likely a fixed amount of oil in the ground, and at some point we will extract all of it that can be extracted at a lower energy cost than it takes to extract. So peak oil is going to happen, it just matters how far off it is and if we will transition to a different fuel source before it really hurts. grin

In the 70's we were told over and over that ALL of the oil would be gone by 2000. Not peak oil - there would be none left.

You were also told Santa Claus was real...

Since the 70's the technology to find and extract oil has improved... The effort/ resources to find and extract oil have gone up. I don't think you understand the term 'peak oil' and as a result Somone lied to you to help you understand the situation...

Next time don't be so stubborn and stupid and people won't have to lie to you...

Here in CO we got ruffnecks pulling out oil by the tons. We have the resources but for some reason people who think the government is too involved in gay marriage, marijuana and abortion think that we need more government to regulate the oil industry. Mind boggling.
