Subject: I always used to avoid credit cards.
But about 6 years ago I decided to start building them up so I could increase my buying power at a lower interest. I can see why people get in trouble. The first one I got was only for $500. And I always pay it every month. Never paid a cent of interest. Then I got on for Home Depot cause of a remodel I was doing. They started me at $1500. Same thing. Never paid interest. Once I did carpet and if we paid it off in a year, no interest. We did that. Now a hot water tank for the rent house. If we pay it off in 6 months..no interest. Then we got one from Cabelas. Wanted to build points. By this time the personal card was up to $700 and the Home Depot up to 5K. Cabelas started us at $8,500. Was shocking to us.

So then I had a stroke and we needed 5K work on sewers. So the Cabelas is hoovering around 5K. And the others have still gone up to $1100 and $7,500. I know when we get Cabelas paid of this summer it is likely to go up again. You have to be pretty disciplined, but I can see how people lose control of their credit.

I've had 1 credit card since 1994 and my credit score is about 835 or something crazy like that, but Credit Score doesn't affect much in Canada anyways, certainly not your interest rate. Maybe it does if your stupid and have a real low rate but I dont know.

Point is, in all that time, I have never once carried a balance. I've always used the Credit Card as a "debit card", meaning I buy something I already have cash for and then go pay it off a few days later via my online-banking.

I firmly believe if you are using a Credit Card as a Credit Card, you are living outside your means and are dumb.

Indeed. That's why my credit is over 750 now.

Mithan, in the US they use your credit score to determine what interest you will pay.

I use them to pay my bills to get air miles, and pay off the balances in full every month. I haven't had to pay for a plane ticket in probably a decade.

Nice. I build a lot of points every time I'm sent to Japan. But I've never redeemed them.

Which airline card do you have? I've been thinking about changing from my regular old blue american express to an airline miles card, because I do a decent amount of traveling now a days, but I haven't really looked into it much yet.

I've had a CC since I turned 18, and I've always paid off the balance at the end of the month. I've never bought anything I didn't have the money for in my bank account, so I always find it strange people use their CC to purchase stuff they know they can't or will not be able to afford.

I always use my credit cards because it is free money with the cash back.

Just use the card like a debit card and pay it off each month... you get the cash back and no interest.

Yep, this. We use out rewards card to pay every bill that will accept a credit card payment, then just pay the credit card off each month. We dont spend a ton of money each year but we have gotten some small kitchen appliances, Target gift cards and Best Buy gift cards from it. Id estimate we've gotten about $750 in benefits from rewards over the past few years. Not too shabby for a middle class family.

Reap,

Call them and ask for a APR decrease because you are going to have to transfer off that balance to another card and cancel because the rent is to damn high, joke, APR. A better start is to get another card with low apr that you can indeed do that.

Usually they have worked with me, but in the case they do not, start the transfer to another card, once it is cleared of to the new card, call back and tell them you want to cancel it because their APR is too high. Shockingly their retention agent will now want to talk business. shock

This has worked for me many times. So much so that I tried it again last year on a card with zero balance and the rep said she has never seen an APR that low for any of their cards and all they would ever give now for anyone was 2 points higher.

Call these credit card companies and haggle. Or get a low apr one with your good credit and transfer off to a 12 month no % and save some cash. Yes there is a transfer fee but less than a year of %.

Just an FYI.

Interesting. And sounds logical. I only have the Home Depot card though that is large enough and I don't think they will allow that to their card.

We use them on purpose to pay for free lodging when we travel. We racked up $17k and have 3 weeks stay "free" at the best hotel in VA beach this summer. Paid off the $17k easily last week with one check.

Credit cards are awesome, if you have the money to pay them.

Look for another new low apr one which should be fairly easy since your credit should be decent since your maximums have been going up and transfer balance(s) to it for a year. If your credit score is good.

When haggling use:

1) Sob story about your health.
2) Threats to cancel or "look for another card option".

to your advantage.

Good luck.

I have a sears card, a regular credit card, and a corporate card. None carry a balance for longer than a month.

I have 2 loans and a mortgage however, one loan is down below 1500 (almost paid off college debt yay) the other is around 2500 and is for my bed purchase (2 years same as cash lol).

I should have my student loans paid off this year (in the next 5 months as I am paying like 3 times more than I owe) and I just bumped up how much i'm paying on my bed as well as I want to be as debt free as possible by the end of the year

The best time to haggle down APR on cards is when you have a zero balance.

Tell them: "Well I would be more likely to use your card if the APR was lower?" "No?" "Well then I need to cancel to card."

Retention agent: "Well let me see what I can do." thinking

When it works then the next time you have to use it = lower APR for the future.

Credit cards should be used the same as debit cards, if you can't pay for it at the time of purchase you don't buy it. You should never use them to put you in debt unless it is unavoidable (major car repair, medical ect.) I will never understand how people have such a hard time using credit cards and not making themselves go in to ridiculous debt.
