That too.
I understand people using the title for others it applies to.
But people who use the title on themselves are just pretentious asshats. If you when you introduce yourself you say "I'm Dr. Who Givesashit" that's a good clue you're a douche.

I take it you guys don't go for honorifics of any sort, then? I mean, if earned honorifics aren't valid, then the unearned BS social convention ones certainly aren't. In that case, "Mr" should also go out the window. And "sir". And, "Teacher".

Honorifics are fine but you don't use them for yourself. Your own stationary should not say "Big Douche, Esq."

I understand what you're saying but I've learned that I have to introduce myself as Dr. Spitboi, because otherwise the next question from the patient is, "Are you the doctor?" "No, I'm the janitor who wears a stethoscope and is keenly interested in how long you've been having the discharge from your peen."

Hmmm. So your STATIONERY that markets your position and credentials shouldn't mention your earned titles? And you should never ever introduce yourself with them to others? How the hell will anyone know you have them, then? Telepathy? Well. Okie-dokie then...

Sure, but you're a real doctor...for at least a valid if disgusting portion of the human anatomy, anyway. A doctor of medieval literature is really never in a position to say "Oh, you mistook me for my TA? Why NO, I'm a doctor!". Speaking of honorifics for medical personnel, my primary physician is a PA. I never know what to call him. His MA calls him "Mr.", but I usually call him "P.A.", even though it's not really a title.

It's usually something along the lines of: "what do you do?" "I'm a lawyer." or "Hi, I'm X, I'm a lawyer here at the Y." I can't imaigne what sort of pretentious twat you'd have to be to introduce yourself as "Big Douche, Esquire."
If you're a doctor in a hospital you can say "Hi, I'm Spit Boi, a doctor here." Although in that context "Hi, I'm Doctor Spitboi" doesn't really offend me either because it's your actual job title.
Professors can easily say "Hi, I'm Fat Douche, a professor of X here at the college."

I represented an attorney in an IRS audit and the client made a check out to me with the esq. after my name. Like an enlisted man talking to an officer I told him, the esq. (sir in military-talk) wasn't necessary, I work for a living. I think the Dr title would be cool for about 6 months.

I think some of it is about the context. I want the person I'm seeing at the hospital to tell me they are Dr. so and so. But if I meet them at a party and they introduce themselves as Dr. so and so, I'm thinking "douchecanoe" immediately and looking for an exit strategy. If I'm corresponding with an attorney on business and their stationary has whatever form of honorific on it (e.g. esq.), I don't care or notice really. But, same thing, if I meet them socially they'd better just say hi I'm JoeBob osemthin.

This thread appears to be about Yuki mocking people for being pretentious. However if you look a little deeper you'll notice that Yuki has reminded us of the fact that he is a lawyer and set himself above other lawyers because he's not as pretentious as them.

We do not do titles here, we don't do sir and we have a respectful form of "you" but no one uses it since it's considered rude. We went away with all the honorifics sometime in the 60's only guy that has a title is the king.

Yeah I did notice that in Germany! I've had dealings with two doctors of engineering there, great people but everywhere you looked it was Dr this, doctor that, administrators were very particular about adressing them properly too. I was full on expecting them to whip out a probe and start diagnosing the old Volkswagens as we went to lunch.
