I think my biggest problem with Bioware is that they are not that good at creating rules. The D&D rules were better than what they came up with.
Sit down and try and make rules and it is easy to fall into the traps Bioware did. Overly structured leading to blandness.

DA2 went beyond that. It was just downright lazy the way they reused the same environments over and over and over.
I actually liked the way they moved away from their terrible "go 4 places in any order and collect 4 things then do the final mission" story structure in DA2. But it was a huge step backwards in terms of effort spent on the game part of the game.

Not being able to play it from a top-down isometric perspective is what really killed it for me. Their excuse for making it third-person only was that they wanted players to be able to admire their shitty vistas.

Baldur's Gate had a boring story and an awful collection of grating, horribly unlikable characters. Minsc might as well be Jar Jar Binks. And BG2 made the mistake of revolving almost entirely around Imoen -- I wanted to stab myself every time one of those whiny dream sequences popped up. Icewind Dale's anonymous player-made characters were a thousand-times better.
Planescape Torment is a work of art.
